October 20, 2014 - Pueo or Hawaiian Owl (Asio flammeus sandwichensis)

Requested by: coramatus

A Hawaiian subspecies of the Short-eared Owl, Pueo live in a variety of habitats on all of the main islands of Hawaii. They are not nocturnal, hunting small mammals mostly during the day. Females construct nests by lining scrapes in the ground with feathers and grasses. They also incubate the eggs, while males bring them food and defend the nests against predators.

Edited on Nov. 7, 2014: I’ve changed the drawing on this post to correct an error with the number of toes shown. The original incorrectly showed three toes in front instead of two. You can learn more about owls and their rather unique feet here: http://www.owls.org/Information/feet.htm
