The five Game of Thrones prequel spinoffs currently in development at HBO will not feature any existing characters, HBO president Casey Bloys confirms to TVLine. However, the exec is quick to add that “there may be [familiar] bloodlines” in the potential series.
Last May, HBO announced that it had deals with four writers — Carly Wray (Mad Men), Jane Goldman (X-Men), Brian Helgeland (Mystic River) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island) — to “explore different time periods of [George R.R. Martin]’s vast and rich universe. There is no set timetable for these projects. We’ll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in.” (It was later confirmed that the cabler is entertaining a fifth spinoff idea.)
Bloys tells TVLine that he’s “liking what I’m seeing. I have seen some things that I think are potentially very exciting.” He also notes that the earliest any of the new series would air is one year after Game of Thrones‘ series finale (which will bow in 2019).
“Should we go forward and make a pilot and [then] a series, nothing would air on HBO until at least a year after Game of Thrones ends. We want the final season of Game of Thrones, being the special event that it is [to stand on its own]. We don’t want to use it to launch [a new series]. We want some separation there.”
I’m guessing they’ll be going generations backward in Westerosi history rather than forward, but it could go either way – with multiple series, it may be both.
GRRM said all 5 spin-off in development are prequels rather than sequels.
I’m in as long as they don’t screw up the ending of GOT.
Unfortunately really bad endings to series seem to be all the rage these days. HBO started it with the Sopranos cliff hanger finale. Chuck, Lost, HIMYM and BSG are a few more popular shows that all had terrible endings. We can hope GoT won’t follow suit, but I won’t be shocked if they do.
Why kill a good show when it’s on fire in place of an unknown entity (or five). Just work with JRR Martin on stretching the OG GOT out.
Well, that sucks. I like the story, but, I like the story because of the specific actors. I will be one not interested in watching the replacements.
As long as they stick with Martins vision and keep us guessing as far as who lives or dies. GOT has lost its edge ever since they passed the book timeline. No longer am I scared that one of my favorites will be killed. I still love it, but don’t LOVE it. It has been pussified.
I’m hoping for a prequel about the ”dance of dragons”….a very exciting story.

One of the spin offs will probably feature Targaryen history. (Tales of Dunk and Egg)
Arya and Hound should be in any spinoff going to the land west of westeros
