Kota’s grandfather’s life hobby was Bonsai, the Japanese art of growing trees in containers. From him, Kota’s mother got a passion for gardening. Not surprisingly, Kota has a love of plants, as well. “The fondness for the green is in my blood. I could not help myself but to be surrounded by plants.”

Kota’s space couldn’t more appropriately match his personality — unassuming and cool. The sun-drenched space features high ceilings, industrial details and sparse modern furnishings. Warm woods and bold art balance sleek lines. And of course, there are plenty of plants. An impressive cactus flanks the couch. But the showstopper is the waterfall of vines that spills from the high shelves along one wall in the living room. It’s the perfect symbol of Kota’s style: minimal and industrial meets wild nature.

Kota is newly married — his wife Momo was visiting from London when we met at the apartment. The two are preparing for Kota’s imminent move to London. Although he’s enjoyed living in Brooklyn, he looks forward to their new home overseas.
