“The crazy thing was ... I didn’t even dream of this,” the 20-year-old told AAA at the Subiaco Hotel yesterday.

“Four years ago I was at a festival as a fan and Fatboy Slim was on the main stage and he played one of my songs.

“I was in the crowd and couldn’t move. It was the weirdest thing. I was just standing there (in shock). I thought my life was made and nothing would ever beat that feeling. Then the next year we got booked on that main stage.”

The Scared to be Lonely hitmaker said he and Bieber bonded over their shared experience of becoming famous as teenagers.

“We’re both young, both touring on the road a lot and both love music. We can really talk about that,” he said.

“He said ‘You should come with me to Australia, it’s going to be crazy’, and I was like ‘Yeah, let’s do it’. Besides this tour we are also very good friends, we Facetime every now and then. Good times.”

Despite his pal’s bad-boy reputation, Garrix said they had not planned any wild parties.

“But that’s what I always say and then I end up partying,” he said with a laugh.

“I really hope to see some more of Australia, do some tourist sights in-between and be able to relax.

“After this tour I go straight into my own tour and that ends in October. I don’t want to exhaust myself in the first two weeks.

“I want to work on some new music here, be inspired. I’m excited for the shows and to see and meet all these new people.”

Garrix said he felt very lucky to “make people happy doing what makes me happy”.

“If I see someone smile, it makes me smile,” he said.

“So if I see a thousand people in a crowd smile it makes me so happy. It gives me so much adrenaline.

“After every show I can’t sleep. It’s such an insane feeling.”
