When Arrow premiered on The CW in 2012, many fans were apprehensive about what looked to be a teen soap version of Batman Begins conflated with DC's Emerald Archer. Over the course of the first two seasons, however, the show proved to be a true successor to Smallville and the jumping off point for a shared television universe featuring some of DC's most popular heroes and villains. From there, The Flash spinoff became the first cog in a wheel that now includes Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, after her brief tenure at CBS. While the upcoming Black Lightning may exist in its own universe for now, it's probably only a matter of time before it gets pulled into the Arrowverse.
While smaller crossovers like the upcoming Flash/Supergirl musical team-up have made the TV shows feel like their comic counterparts, the producers of the Arrowverse prefer to let each group of heroes figure out their own problems. But with the popularity of last year's Invasion crossover, it's hard not to wonder when all of these disparate heroes will join forces once again to take on a threat bigger than them all.
A few weeks back, the Arrowverse producers stated that a true four-show crossover was being planned next year, and thanks to TV Line, we now have more confirmation of this plan. Speaking during the PaleyFest panel for the Arrowverse, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg reiterated The CW's commitment to bringing the four shows together for one big event every season. Arrow star Stephen Amell also shared what The CW President Mark Pedowitz said when he asked whether the network would be continuing with the crossovers each year: "You’re f–king right we are."
In the meantime, each of the superheroes have plenty of individual problems to deal with on a weekly basis. For Oliver, that means serial killers like Prometheus and crime bosses like Kovar. The Flash, meanwhile, has more than his fair share of Speedsters to contend with, while Supergirl regularly deals with alien foes. And the Legends, naturally, constantly face threats to the time stream, leading to many fantastical adventures.
Given that the crossovers have tended to be right before the winter finales of each show, we're still many months away from any sort of plan coming together. Still, it's clear that the producers, writers, and stars of each show are thinking about how to bring everyone together. Given that Supergirl still exists in a parallel Earth, perhaps the next big event will be a variation on Flashpoint in an effort to merge the Arrowverse.
