You might have seen reports floating around about a couple breaking up in the comments of Burger King's Instagram — but it turns out the whole thing is probably a hoax.

It all started with this innocent photo posted to the Burger King Instagram account on January 11.

A user by the name of @jordan_vonsmith86 commented, "My girl legit took 20 minutes ordering in the drive thru last night, those whoppers were worth it tho lol"

A second user, @shanlee_rose, followed up with, "Umm excuse me @jordan_vonsmith86??? I don't recall going last night or ever liking Burger King who are you talking about?"

Drama, right?! Then their friends started to chime in with comments like "F***ing knew it" and "I told you I saw him with a girl at rogue one."

Jordan defended himself: he was just "catching up" with @kitcass01 — who apparently goes by Cassandra — and Shanlee needed to "chill out." But Cassandra wanted nothing to do with the situation, which was getting messier by the minute.

As the scandal unfolded, Shanlee came to a conclusion. She was done with Jordan. "Hope the whopper jr's were worth it. Your sh*t's outside," she wrote.

The story first broke on The Chive in January and wound up spreading to at least a five other sites over the next few weeks.

But then people started to wonder... was this whole thing even real?

One person even called it "super fake" and pointed out that whoever was behind the supposed hoax could've done a more convincing job.

And that theory — as crazy as it sounds — actually checks out. As BuzzFeed News points out, Jordan's account looks kind of fake. He has just 10 followers.

Shanlee has just 12 followers, and a reverse image search of her profile picture brings up photos of a woman named Jewel Holland, BuzzFeed discovered.

The other "friends" tagged in the comments section also appear to use stolen photos.

Burger King has yet to comment on the story.
