Ryota is an unpopular writer although he won a literary award 15 years ago. Now, Ryota works as a private detective. He is divorced from his ex-wife Kyoko and he has an 11-year-old son Shingo. His mother Yoshiko lives alone at her apartment. One day, Ryota, his ex-wife Kyoko, and son Shingo gather at Yoshiko's apartment. A typhoon passes and the family must stay there all night long.

YOU LAUGH AND YOU CRY, YOU LAUGH AND CRY AT THE SAME TIME, YOU REALIZE THAT THE ARRIVAL OF A STORM IS INEVITABLE, BUT WHAT YOU CAN CHANGE IS YOUR OWN ATTITUDE, YOUR ENDURANCE, YOUR PATIENCE TO SIT THROUGH IT, AND OF COURSE LIKE ALL STORMS IT WILL EVENTUALLY PASS, THE SKY WILL CLEAR UP AND SO WILL YOUR KOKORO, CLOUDS WILL PART TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW OPPORTUNITIES, TRAINS WILL START RUNNING AGAIN, NO USE HOLDING ONTO YOUR FAVORITE UMBRELLA THAT'S ALREADY BROKEN, EVERYTHING WILL BE DAIJOBU. SORRY FOR THE CAPS I AM JUST SO EMOTIONAL AT THE MOMENT, THIS IS THE MOST INVIGORATING FILM I'VE SEEN IN SUCH A LONG TIME.
Hirokazu Kore-eda first established himself as a major filmmaker with a string of audacious dramas that included a harrowing portrait of modern poverty (“Nobody Knows”) and a transcendent vision of the great beyond (“After Life”). In recent years, however — at least since 2009’s “Air Doll,” a contemporary fairy tale in which Bae Doo-na plays an inflatable sex doll who comes to life — the great Japanese humanist has downshifted towards more openly sentimental slice-of-life stories, churning out low-key masterpieces with such regularity and deceptive effortlessness that it can be easy to take them for granted.
So when Kore-eda unloads another gently brilliant film full of characters so real and full of life that it feels as though could fly…

We must approach life like a cup of ices that has frozen solid: Just keep chipping away. There are no shortcuts.
A simple drama that’s emotionally rich and genuinely moving at places. Though the characters are complex and flawed, their poignantly written emotional arcs make them sympathetic and lovable. The family dynamics is explored in a deep and heartfelt manner as well. Hiroshi Abe, Taiyo Yoshizawa as the kid and Kirin Kiki deliver excellent performances. Few scenes of Kiki simply move you into tears. Her delightfully hopeful character was well conceived, for the way she accepts life and it’s unpredictable flow with open arms. On the whole, it is tender n painful yet a beautiful watch.
I think, if only I could wish this into existence, Hirokazu Koreeda should make a hour long TV drama series. At the end of all of his movies I just want to spend more time with his characters. I want to see what more will happen to them. I want to see how their relationships will develop, grow, fall apart. Koreeda's films are sometimes filled with familiar figures (in After the Storm there's the ne'er-do-well father, the frustrated ex-wife, the hopeful, yet realistic mother, and the also hopeful and realistic child), characters we have seen again and again, but they are so well-crafted and just so damn human that they deserve a longer existence than they are given.
What joy…
After the Storm is placid waters with pent-up emotions bubbling under. Director Hirokazu Koreeda loves giving spotlights to the down and outs, and this time it's an exteriorly regular family coping with recent divorce, family death, and an upcoming storm.
In a way it's reasonable to call After the Storm a drama-free drama, as there actually isn't any scene featuring crying, laughing or even quarreling. It's almost two hours of real life people cleaning up the baggages of their lives and trying to survive the storm, both inwardly and outwardly. Japanese filmmakers have long been the leading pack in the family drama department (see Tokyo Story), and After the Storm is definitely the modern variant of that legacy. It offers…
it's not that easy growing up to be the man you want to be
So rarely can you say a film feels as true to life as After the Storm. Kor-eda's effort is achingly humanist and striking in its bitter honesty; conveying above all that life takes work. It isn't a message you often see in movies, unromantic and incrementally powerful rather than instantaneous and picturesque...but it's honest. Hiroshi Abe's protagonist lives a life filled with broken promises, forgotten dreams, and a duplicitous desperation; but he ultimately becomes a character we want to believe in.
