Over on Facebook, DIYer Ben Eagen recently shared with us an interesting project that he has been working on for the visually-impaired. “The All-Seeing Pi” is a Raspberry Pi-based vision enhancement platform, inspired by his friend Dan.

With hopes of improving how blind people interact with their world, both Ben and Dan conceived the idea for a video feed connected to a display, with a wearable screen in the ideal spot for maximum vision. This enables someone to focus on just the screen, and let the camera capture the detail and depth of the environment.

The setup consists of a Raspberry Pi along with a Pi Camera, a 3D-printed frame housing a 5" HDMI display, and a GoPro head strap. The video feed is provided via OpenCV and RaspiCam.

In the end, the prototype served as a successful proof of concept. You can check out more of the build or help contribute to this amazing project on Eagen’s blog.
