Mysterious Apple TV-like Device with NFC, Bluetooth Revealed By FCC Filing

Apple may just be working on a new, interesting and as-of-now unannounced device, according to a new report. The rumor comes from an weekly update of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) database, which was first spotted by French news website Consomac. In that update, a regulatory label reveals some interesting clues about this unannounced Apple device.

For one, it uses the model number A1844, which is currently not in use by Cupertino — concreting the fact that it’ll be an upcoming device. The device is similar in size to the fourth-generation Apple TV, and also shares similar screw placements. AppleInsider points out that there were associated tests that seem to reveal Bluetooth and NFC capabilities. But interestingly enough, there were no Wi-Fi tests noted in the documentation — indicating that the device would either re-use existing hardware, or that Wi-Fi capability won’t be included.

The device also has different power specifications than current-generation Apple TVs. Rather than the 12V and 920mA that the fourth-gen Apple TV power supply is rated at, A1844 has a power draw of 100mA — with a peak of 700mA — and a voltage rating between 5.5V and 13.2V, according to the mysterious FCC filing.

Speculating on just what the device could be is tough. An Engadget writer theorized that it could be a new and improved generation of Apple TV with NFC and Bluetooth capabilities. Other — and perhaps more likely — options include a retail device meant for use in an Apple Store, since it has the NFC capability that Apple Pay uses. It could also be some type of home automation hub, Engadget pointed out.

Much of the associated testing and documentation — including photos, user manuals, and schematics — are hidden by a confidentiality request, according to MacRumors.
