Jim Henson’s epic and iconic fantasy-adventure The Dark Crystal is returning to theaters for two nights only.

It’s been 35 years since it first stunned audiences and critics. The 1982 movie turned a profit but wasn’t a massive hit taking $40.58 million at the domestic box office, unadjusted for inflation.

Part of the problem for its limited success was that some parents considered it too dark for children although it’s December 17 release date also pitted it against the likes of Tootsie ($177.2 million, unadjusted) and the already massively successful E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial ($435.11 million domestic, unadjusted) - it’s worth noting that it didn't stop The Dark Crystal becoming the year’s 16th highest-grossing film in North America.

Co-directed by Henson and Frank Oz, the film will return to big screens across the U.S. in a special event, a joint effort from Fathom Events, The Jim Henson Company and Universal Pictures. Already visually stunning, select locations will be showing a newly restored 4K version.

Each screening of The Dark Crystal will also feature a brand-new featurette with Lisa Henson, CEO and President of The Jim Henson Company, reflecting on the making of the film and its creative legacy.

“Jim Henson created a truly one-of-a-kind experience with The Dark Crystal, one that is rarely seen on the big screen,” said Tom Lucas, Fathom Events Vice President of Studio Relations. “Fathom Events could not be more excited about the privilege of working with The Jim Henson Company and Universal Pictures to give movie lovers the chance to see the visual splendor of The Dark Crystal in movie theaters.”

In May 2017, it was announced that The Jim Henson Company in association with Netflix would produce a 10-episode prequel series titled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance that will explore the world created for the original movie.

The Dark Crystal will play in select U.S. movie theaters on Sunday, February 25, and Wednesday, February 28, 2018 - the locations will be revealed on January 12, 2018. Tickets can be purchased from that day online at Fathom Events or at participating theater box offices.
