News DiRT 4’s sim handling “closer to the real deal than DiRT Rally”

With the recent announcement of DiRT 4, we found out the title will include a simulation handling mode. It begged the question: will it be similar to what we find in Codemasters’ uncompromising rally sim DiRT Rally?

Codemasters Chief Designer Paul Coleman recently spoke to Redbull and on the subject of DiRT 4’s handling commented: “we are taking everything we learned with DiRT Rally and using that as our foundation. That means we are taking our simulation engine, improving it and building everything else on top of that. We are then taking everything we loved about all the other games in the franchise and bringing it all together into a much more coherent package.”

You would be forgiven for thinking then that DiRT 4 will use DiRT Rally’s handling model as a base and mix it in with elements found in previous DiRT games to make for a slightly more accessible and fun handling model.

However this doesn’t seem to be the case at all, “If you want something fun that doesn’t require in-depth knowledge of automotive engineering and vehicle dynamics, then you can just dive into the game and have a great time, said Coleman. “If you loved the challenge of DiRT Rally, then you can switch to the Sim Handling mode and have an experience that is even closer to the real deal than we managed to achieve with DiRT Rally“.

These comments above suggest anything but a dumbed-down version of DiRT Rally’s handling, indeed it suggests the opposite which is intriguing news. DiRT 4 really does want to be the experience which caters equally to the more causal gamer and the sim racer alike. If Codemasters can pull this off then I think it will be a first in the racing genre and a fantastic feat.
