November 16, 2015 - Guianan Toucanet or Guyana Toucanet (Selenidera piperivora)

Requested by: @toucandad

These small toucans are found in northeastern South America, in Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. They eat seeds, fruits, such as figs, palm fruits, and peppers, and some insects. Nesting in tree cavities lined with wood chips and regurgitated seeds, both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks. They are sexually dimorphic. Females have grey feathers on the front of their necks and chests and chestnut on the back of their necks, while males heads and necks are mostly black.
