After Ben Affleck announced he would not direct the new standalone Batman movie, it was reported that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves was in talks for the job. Days later, reports claimed that negotiations were falling apart. Now, Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that Reeves has signed a deal to direct and produce the movie.

"I have loved the Batman story since I was a child," Reeves said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen."

In January, Ben Affleck announced that he would not direct the upcoming standalone Batman movie, though he will still star in it.

"There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion, and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require," Affleck said when he announced he wouldn't direct the movie.

In August last year, Affleck released some early test footage of Deathstroke, who is confirmed as the villain in the movie. Later, it was confirmed that Joe Manganiello had been cast in the role.

Affleck first played Batman in 2016's Batman v Superman. He'll play the character again in this summer's Justice League. A release date for The Batman has not been announced.
