Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter, who also once played for the team, allegedly got into an altercation with a doorman at a South Side bar and then grabbed the wrists of a police officer who tried to intervene. Porter was arrested after and video of his arrest has been released with him jawing at cops during the incident.
According to court documents, when Porter arrived at The Flats yesterday, the doorman said to him, “Last time you were here, you threatened to kill me. You need to leave. You are not getting in.”
Porter began yelling at the doorman and allegedly lunged at him, grabbed him by his arms and lifted him off the ground.
Paul Abel, the 5-foot-6, 145-pound officer who filed the complaint, said Porter, 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds, ignored him when he asked what was going on and grabbed him by the arms and lifted him off the ground. The doorman, described as 6-foot and 195 pounds, wasn’t aggressive with Porter and had his hands in his pockets, according to the complaint.
The officer says an allegedly drunk Porter then grabbed him by the wrist in a threatening manner and began to yell at him that he did nothing wrong. Porter was eventually arrested after the officer called for backup.
In the footage, you can see a heated Porter in cuffs. It’s unclear exactly what he’s saying to the officers.
Sources at the bar say Porter was at the bar with at least two Steelers players who were screaming they would never come back to that bar.
Porter was charged with assault. He posted the $25,000 bond and faces a preliminary hearing Jan. 19 in Pittsburgh City Court.
