Hello,

I havent posted in here for a while but I still watched the boards from time to time. Since joining I felt confident enough to upgrade my mods. Mainly battery based mods. I have a X-Cube Mini 75 W and a Tesla 80 W mod. I am using LG HG2 18650's with a Efest LUC V4 charger. tanks include SMOK TFV4, Kanger Subtank plus, Kanger Toptank Plus and a Triton 2. I rarely go below .5 ohm and rarely go above 50 W.

Well, Monday I purchased the Alien kit from SMOK with the TFV8 baby beast with 2 new batteries just for the mod itself. I was loving it, until I had a scare today. It happened while I was driving. I went to take a puff and I heard a loud pop, a burning smell and sparks and the error message of "do not abuse products". I thought the worst meaning my batteries where about to go. The coil was a .4 (40 to 80 W) and I was running the watts at 50. Sweet spot for the coil wattage was 55 to 65.

I pulled over as quick as possible on the freeway (I wasn't about to toss my mod out the window on the freeway and risk damage to other peoples property or worse and just keep driving. When I purchased the mod I inherited all risks and responsibility). Well after a few minutes and nothing further happening I took the tank off of the mod and took the batteries out. The batteries where not warm, there was no warping and no fumes so I put them back in the turned off mod as I had no other way of transporting them safely.

I make a small detour on my way home and go to the vape shop where I purchased the mod. I explain what had happened, and the worker reattached the TFV8 to the mod, turned it on and hit the fire bar. Everything was working fine aside from a burn smell returning. Obviously the cotton was now burnt. Even with a full tank still (I had refilled the tank before leaving work). After further research we believe the TFV8 had shorted. Seems common reading posts on other forums.

Is there a way to know for sure? I have never had this happen before. I know there will always be worse case scenario so anything is possible in between best and worst case. Any insight in to the subject would be awesome.

Thank you.

It is the risk you run when you buy drop-in coils. While it is possible with real RTA's it is less likely because you build the coil and can avoid contact with anything it shouldnt be. Sounds like you managed a dead short somehow. The coil head should definitely be thrown away. I personally hated the TFV4 and for that reason will never own a smok tank again.. i use a true RTA with a RDA styled feed i love it and run 4mm dual coils i chain vape 30+ml a day and never a dry hit unless i neglect to refil the tank. For this reason i cannot squonk or rda. It is what it is... they mass produce these things and while they can be elegant looking they are not flawless. The "RBA" deck for these tanks leave me wanting more which is what really pushed me away from the TFV series

Sounds like a faulty coil.
