Haiti Science Kits

We are 8th graders from Ness City Kansas, at Ness City Jr/Sr High. For our Science class, we created this page to raise money to buy supplies for children at Christianville, a school in Haiti. Doing this project is a way for us to experience managing difficult problems and helping others in another country.

Kids in Haiti don’t have things that we do. We are trying to send school experiments for them. Our goal is to raise $2,000 for supplies for them. One out of five children in Haiti die before age five. There are 400,000 kids in Haiti without parents. More of their houses are in ruins because of the recent hurricane.

People who can fix these problems could be in Haitian schools right now. We want to help those kids. We want them to live like we do. We want them to learn like we do. We want to improve their lives in anyway we can. We want to give them hope. However, to do that, we need your help. Help us send them hope.

Thank you for reading,

Sincerely, Ness City 8th graders

Below are details of what we would like to send and why:

We are going to send science experiments to 13 to 18 year old students at Christianville School in Gressier, Haiti. These experiments will include materials to make oobleck, hovercrafts, and wind wagons so that students can become excited and curious about learning science, as well as practice engineering and design. We have tested the experiments ourselves and learned a lot about the scientific method along the way. We will also send materials for a ‘wave in a bottle’ and lava lamp activities. Waves are an important topic in Haiti because they are surrounded by the ocean and earthquake waves are a devastating force. We will send materials to do experiments with plants that could help students learn how to better grow plants for food.

We would like to send 2 Kindle Fire tablets with solar chargers and cases. This will let us send several ebooks, video demonstrations of experiments, and apps that can collect scientific measurements.

Christianville School has set aside space for a science lab, but does not have materials in it yet. We can help make this science lab a reality. By sending supplies such as beakers, graduated cylinders, scales, and microscopes students can create their own experiments. Our teacher visited the school in 2012 and got to see the hundreds of students that were eager to learn.

COSTS
Specific experiments such as oobleck, wind wagons, and hovercrafts to explore engineering and design will cost $300

Science lab supplies including microscopes, beakers, graduated cylinders, scales, and test tubes will cost $1000

Packaging and shipping the kit will cost $300

The Kindle Fire tablets, cases, and chargers will cost $250

We would like to raise a little over our planned costs for unexpected expenses in preparing the kits.
