Hi, my name is Griffin Newman and I like the movie DOWNSIZING. By the time you are reading this I am probably dead, having been brutally murdered by the entirety of Film Twitter.
in this movie people go from BIG to ˢᵐᵃˡˡ and incidentally this movie also goes from GOOD AND INTERESTING to ᵖʳᵉᵗᵗʸ ᵇᵃᵈ
a concept that would have been much better in the hands of yorgos lanthimos or even someone like charlie mcdowell. i was pretty intrigued while i was watching it, but it left a bad taste in my mouth afterwards. my original review was just gonna be “???” which pretty much sums it up
It's honestly impressive how they managed to take such a fun, inventive concept with so many narrative possibilities, and turn it into something that excruciatingly fucking boring.
Downsizing was released in 2004, nominated for 6 Oscars, including best Adapted screenplay, best picture, and best director. The screenplay won the first round of the Blacklist survey for unproduced scripts. The project was picked up originally by Ron Howard and was then around until 20th Century Fox finally began production. David O. Russell, Ridley Scott, and Spike Jonze were all at some point set to direct, and Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, George Clooney, and Kate Winslet were all at one point attached. The name was changed post-Cannes premiere, where it was widely acclaimed, despite failing to win the Palme. Charlie Kaufman reportedly did rewrites after test audiences found the ending too bitter, but these suggestions were thrown out. Starring…
What a colossal mess. Spends over an hour on intriguing worldbuilding and exposition only to throw it all away in the 2nd and 3rd acts for several pointless tangents that don’t utilize the premise at all. The theme constantly contradicts itself, Matt Damon is flatter than he’s ever been before, and none of the characters have enough desire or drive to invest the audience in any way. Feels like 5 different movies all masquerading as one lazy piece of “satire” and each taking themselves FAR too seriously.
The only saving grace is the absolutely delightful Hong Chau. Definitely deserves a Best Supporting Actress nom come January.
me for the first few minutes of this movie: WOW THEY'RE SO SMALL...THIS IS AMAZING... I CAN'T GET OVER HOW SMALL THEY ARE
me five minutes into the small world: okay i'm over it
i was just starting to jot down some thoughts about this half-baked movie when i saw that don hertzfeldt released another still from WORLD OF TOMORROW: EPISODE 2 and i forgot that Downsizing ever happened.
except for Udo Kier. nobody forgets Udo Kier. he rules in this harder than he's ruled in a long time.
