Travel chaos is expected as snow swamps the UK

A bitter arctic gale is sweeping across Britain bringing up to eight inches of snow, icy conditions and strong winds.

Temperatures will drop as low as -10C in parts of the country with gusts of up to 60mph.

The Met Office has issued a yellow snow warning for most of Britain and advises that there will be an ”increased risk of disruption from snow" across London and the south.

Severe weather conditions are also expected to cause travel disruption in north England and Scotland.

Public Health England has issued a level two cold weather alert warning of severe cold, heavy snow and icy conditions until Sunday.

Up to eight inches of snow is expected

National Rail has advised that the Thameslink network will be heavily affected by the adverse weather.

It has released a statement explaining: “Wintry weather with the spell of persistent rain, low temperatures and potentially snow has been predicted across the Thameslink network from this afternoon. 

“Thameslink are taking steps to minimise the impact of the weather on your journey. Please check before you travel. 

“Please remember to take extra care while you’re on stations as surfaces may become slippery.”

A spokesperson added: “Our team of specialists have been monitoring the weather closely since Monday. Our orange army is on standby to keep passengers moving during severe weather.”
