About the author

Judith Byron Schachner has been illustrating and writing children's books since 1992 and has given numerous presentations in schools and libraries. Her workshops are designed to be warm and personal with a special regard for the less than stellar student.
"Kids love to review my rotten report cards and laugh out loud at a slide show involving 4 cats and a funeral. Teachers love the 'Seed Box' filled to the brim with a magical collection of 'Junk' to inspire the writer in all of us. Everyone loves to watch 'Don Juan Skippito Bumblito the Great Sword Fighter' come to life with pencil and paper. By the end of the day we all believe that the stories in our own lives are worth writing about."
Judith Byron Schachner grew up outside of Boston in the 1950's. Her early years were not easy: "Growing up we didn't have much money. My mother was very ill, and to make matters worse, I was extremely shy. All my teachers complained that 'Judith needs to speak up in class, Judith needs to improve in arithmetic, and Judith needs to finish her work on time.' But no one complained about my artwork. On paper I drew myself a world where mothers were healthy and teachers were kind. My life was perfection in pencil."
Judith graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1973 with a BFA in illustration and went straight into the "greeting card factories, which included a stint at Hallmark. For five years I designed cute cards, sad cards, funny cards, and wedding cards. I was not having fun; in fact I never wanted to pick up a paintbrush again."
Married life changed many things for Judith. One clear advantage for her was that "for the first time in many years I could step off the 9 to 5 treadmill and devote all my energy to creating a portfolio of children's book art. That was until two little baby girls were born. Then motherhood became my favorite new job. Over the years I read hundreds of books to my daughters. Inspired by the art and words I was moved once again to finish my portfolio and take it on the road to New York. Around the same time I met Donna Jo Napoli who convinced Dutton Children's Books to let me illustrate her novel, The Prince of the Pond," published in 1992.
In 1995 Judith wrote and illustrated her first picture book, Willy and May, and has turned out a number of projects since then. "The wonderful thing about my job is that one day I can be writing about history, as I did in Mr. Emerson's Cook. The next day I'm drawing a wacky old woman for I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie. Or I can bring to life a beloved pet cat in my book The Grannyman. I live in a constant state of 3rd grade bliss - making up stories and drawing pictures. Isn't that what we all did as children?"
Several years ago the great author Lloyd Alexander stood in Judith's back yard admiring her daughters' Viking ship (as Judith puts it, that's another story). Working with Lloyd Alexander has been a dream come true for Judith: "Never in my wildest fantasies did I ever think that my art would inhabit his world of words."

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2024I absolutely love any skippyjon book. Me and my son read these and they ALWAYS are cute and fun to read! I read the first skippyjon book and we were hooked. I bought ALL the skippyjon books and wish there were more!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2016Have your kiddos fell in love with Skippyjon Jones yet? If not, what are you waiting for? Dive in with this awesome book! We use these are bedtime stories in my house. You know how they say you should read to your child every night? These books are perfect for that. They keep you, as a parent, entertained and smiling and kids love their rhythmic predictability with clapping along. Super fun! This one is no exception. Skippy is always a fun read. The puns are awesome! I bought this one for my kiddos for Christmas. I also got a Pete the Cat book as well. I think it might have been the gift that they loved the most because they know we will read it together many times and can equate the gift with the sense of security and bonding they get from the time we spent together. We love reading and we love Skippyjon Jones!
Here is a link to the Pete the Cat one in case you were interested in that as well...

- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2023Skippy is one of our favorite characters! We love his Spanish accent and going on adventures with him in his closet. Definitely recommend adding any of the Skippyjon Jones books to your home or classroom library!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2023This is an exceptionally good book in a WONDERFUL series. I own the whole series because my family and I enjoy these books so much even though they’re made for children. We would all highly recommend them. Something to be aware of is there is Spanish phrases throughout this book, and the other books in the series. I have started a collection of children’s books to have if I would have my own kids someday, books I like, or books I remember reading as a kid.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2021This was a gift for my 4 year old grandson. I have read several others in the series to him and he loved this one as much as the others. We love SkippyJon’s wonderful imagination and the inclusion of several Spanish words to introduce him to the language. The illustrations are beautiful and the text to fun to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2015I love this series of books. We are a bilingual family living in Mexico and we relate so much to the book - plus the sense of humor, the artwork, the story - seriously AWESOME. I do admit I enjoy this book a bit more than my 6 year old daughter does (she's still into Dora, Pinkalicious, Gerald and Piggy books) but we both enjoy this book when she's in the mood. I love this book ALL the time, and if it were up to me we would read Skippyjon constantly - haha ;).
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2015I bought this book because I'm completely in love with all things Skippyjon, and we already had most of the other books. The pictures are fabulous, as usual, and the spunky little kitten/pup is back for another wild adventure. While I must admit it probably isn't the best of the books, it is still wildly funny and cute to read. My kids love it, and the songs and clapping sections make it fun and interactive for them. The best part is the CD of Judy Schachner reading the text aloud so you can hear how the author intended for it to be read. I'd recommend this for anyone who's a Skippyjon fan, but if it's going to be your first visit with the crazy chihuahua-cat, I'd suggest getting one of the earlier ones as well so you have some background info before jumping right into this one. Check out Skippyjon Jones in the Dog House, Lost in Spice, or Cirque de Ole, which in my opinion are some of the best ones. These books also teach some simple Spanish which your kids (and you!) can figure out using the context clues in the text or the pictures - important skills for good readers to practice! Alliteration abounds and Mama Junebug always talks in rhyme, so there are many educational benefits to this book, too. This book loosely tells the story of Snow What (who is actually Snow White), so there is also the element of the slanted fairy tale, as well. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2023As usual, the writers of the Skippyjon Jones books didn't disappoint. I have been buying Skippyjon books since the first book when my kids were itty bitty. My youngest is 12 yrs old and she still loves when I read them to her. My 17yr old (middle child) likes them too, I catch him smiling when I do voices as I read. He remembers from when I read tuem to him as a little boy. Now I read them to my grandloves when they visit.

4.0 out of 5 stars We had a few good chuckles but mostly at my pronunciations
Gave to my granddaughter yesterday and read it to her at bedtime. We had a few good chuckles but mostly at my pronunciations. I advised her to listen to the CD next time and I'll have to as well so I know what accent I need to use. Its very cute!
