Kohl's Vs Costco 'Black Friday' 2017: Early Apple, Microsoft, Samsung Deals

This article is more than 6 years old.

Kohl’s Black Friday deals were the first to arrive in 2017 after its ad leaked late last month. It revealed Kohl’s has some of the very best Black Friday 2017 deals and the retailer’s rise over the last few years looks set to continue. A perfect example is in comparison with traditional heavyweight Costco - there’s only one winner...

This post was done in partnership with BestBlackFriday.com, which specialises in unearthing holiday season sales. Deals highlighted on this page are independently chosen editorial picks and linked to for your convenience. BestBlackFriday may earn affiliate commissions that support its work.

Where Kohl’s Black Friday Beats Costco Black Friday 2017

Thanksgiving Opening Time: Kohl’s will begin their doorbusters at 5pm on Thanksgiving while Costco will remained closed on Thanksgiving.

Membership: Kohl’s does not require a membership for any Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales while Costco often has member-only items and a surcharge is paid at Costco.com if non-members want to make purchases.

Kohl’s Cash: Kohl’s will be bringing back its very popular Kohl’s Cash for Black Friday shopping. You will earn $15 for every $50 spent spent between November 20-25th and you will be able to redeem it between November 26th and December 6th. Costco will not be giving away free cash in its store on every purchase.

Sony Playstation 4 1TB Console Black - Kohl’s has a deal on the Sony PS4 1TB Console Black for $199.99 (product link). While Costco does have this same device, Kohl’s is offering $60 in Kohl’s Cash with every one of these PS4 purchases. Remember Kohl’s Cash is the same thing as free money if you intend to shop at Kohl’s again.

Canon EOS Rebel T6 DSLR Camera 2 Lens Bundle - Kohl’s is offering this Canon camera bundle for $449.99 with $135 Kohl’s Cash (product link). Costco has the identical bundle for $449.99 but will not offer an incentive like Kohl’s Cash. (Note: for more Black Friday camera-specific deals read this article)

Fitbit Charge 2 heart rate + fitness wristband - Kohl’s has the Fitbit Charge 2 heart rate + fitness wristband for $99.99 and is giving customers $30 in free Kohl’s Cash. (product link) Once again the Kohl’s Cash puts Costco in second place even though it has the same price of $99.99 for the same Fitbit Charge 2 package.

Cheap 55-inch HDTV: Kohl’s has the Haier 55-inch 4K Ultra HDTV + $90 Kohl's Cash for $299.99 saving $100 (product link). The cheapest 55-inch HDTV during last year’s Black Friday was $250 and that was not a 4K model. Costco doesn’t currently have anything to match this.

Microsoft Xbox One S 500GB Console: Kohl’s has the Microsoft Xbox One S 500GB Console + $45 Kohl's Cash for $189.99 (saves $90) for a total saving of $135 (product link). While Costco is offering the same device with an extra controller and 3-month Game Pass for $80 off, the Kohl’s Cash gives the win to Kohl’s yet again.

Costco

Where Costco Black Friday Beats Kohl’s Black Friday 2017

Extended Black Friday Sale: Not only does Costco have a traditional Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale that will run from November 24 to November 27, but it also has an extended Black Friday ad scan with deals running from November 17 to November 27. Kohl’s Black Friday deals don’t begin until November 20th when they are first launched online.

HDTV Selection and Quality: If you are looking for a wide selection of HDTVs and a more diverse selection of higher quality models, shop the Costco Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale over Kohl’s. In its Black Friday ad, Kohl’s only has three TVs: a 55-inch Haier (mentioned above), a 55-inch Samsung and a 49-inch LG. Costco on the other hand as over twenty different HDTV deals in more varieties and many more sizes.

While Costco has a few notable benefits, you will notice the overall pattern here: what sees Kohl’s triumph frequently is its hugely popular use of Kohl’s Cash. While this obviously has to be spent in Kohl’s stores, it’s the next best thing to direct savings. Costco is not using its store credits so extensively.
