Seventeen-year-old Bryar Rose has a problem. She’s descended from one of the three magical races—shifters, fairies, or witches. That makes her one of the Magicorum, and Magicorum always follow a fairy tale life template. In Bryar’s case, that template should be Sleeping Beauty.

Should being the key word.

Trouble is, Bryar is nowhere near the sleeping beauty life template. Not even close. She doesn’t like birds or woodland creatures. She can’t sing. And she certainly can’t stand Prince Philpot, the so-called “His Highness of Hedge Funds” that her aunties want her to marry. Even worse, Bryar’s having recurring dreams of a bad boy hottie and is obsessed with finding papyri from ancient Egypt. What’s up with that?

All Bryar wants is to attend a regular high school with normal humans and forget all about shifters, fairies, witches, and the curse that Colonel Mallory the Magnificent placed on her. And she might be able to do just that--if only she can just keep her head down until her eighteenth birthday when the spell that’s ruined her life goes buh-bye.

But that plan gets turned upside down when Bryar Rose meets Knox, the bad boy who’s literally from her dreams. Knox is a powerful werewolf, and his presence in her life changes everything, and not just because he makes her knees turn into Jell-O. If Bryar can’t figure out who—or what—she really is, it might cost both her and Knox their lives… as well as jeopardize the very nature of magic itself.

Wolves and Roses, the first book in the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum, is a fantasy and young adult fiction written by Christina Bauer. The storyline is based from the fictional characters such as werewolves, fairies, witches and other fairy tale characters.

I stopped reading this novel around pages 90-95 because I felt that the story is going nowhere. The pacing of the story is quite slow and what irked me is how horny the character of Knox is; I was annoyed of the repetitive, "Mate! Mate!" whenever he see Bryar Rose.

Despite that I didn't finished reading this, I still give this a 2-star rating because I like how unique the plot of the story is. However, Bauer wasn't able to deliver well because the end-product is not what I'd expected from the synopsis.

ARC from Netgalley for a fair review

DNF @16% I started this rule to not waste time on books anymore. So far, I am hating this book. Maybe it gets better as it reads on, but the writing just isn't for me.

So this book is set in an alternate modern day that somehow has known magical people in it (werewolves, fairies, & witches). Our main character happens to be a human, but has magical ties because she was adopted by fairies. Her life is also scheduled to follow that of Sleeping Beauty, except it's not going according to plan. She sucks at being Sleeping Beauty, and doesn't want anything to do with it.

Okay, lets cover some of the things that really put me off:

First of all, the writing was really juvenile and makes for a poor read.

"The temperature dips a few degrees, too. That means Alec's starting to cast a spell. No way."

NO WAY WHAT?! HE'S A WIZARD.

Philpot is laser-focused on marriage. For a guy his age, it's weird. But then again, everything about Philpot is weird.

Oh really? Like what? I'm sorry but he's 25 years old. I don't see how that's weird. He's a well to do man. The weird thing is his name.

Bryar is an awful protagonist.

"It feels good to lie to them. Not sure what that says about me as a person."

What does it say? It says you're a liar. Not only that? You're ungrateful. You were adopted and given a life of luxury and all you want is a "normal life"? Like girl you drive a range rover and have unlimited credit cards. & all you want to do is lie to your auntie fairies to sneak into some building that you were able to break through all their security measures...to take pictures of papyri so you can decipher it because it's some book of magic? AREN'T YOU TRYING TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE? STOP DILLY DALLYING WITH MAGIC BOOKS.

So aside from the major main character flaws, I just couldn't stand the juvenile style of writing. Everything was just so convenient with snarky comments here and there. The concept sounded interesting, but the personalities and writing needs an update.

Seems like Bryar Rose should have been living a fairy tale life, but the “template” for her life was nothing like what she wants for herself. Face it, Bryar Rose was NOT princess material, she has no interest in the “prince” her three aunts had chosen for her to marry. What she wants is to live like the normal humans, go to a normal high school and leave all this magical stuff behind. Her true passion lay in studying the mysteries of certain ancient papyrus papers, and it was taking that interest just one step too far that would mark a change in Bryar’s life forever as she uncovered more than just ancient writings and met the boy of her dreams standing in a shadow…now, if she could just lose the “Sleeping Beauty” template she has been living, stay awake long enough to reach her eighteenth birthday and avoid being kissed by Prince Philpot, maybe she could live a real girl’s life, her way. Of course, there is a matter of a mystery that must be revealed, deceits that must be uncovered and the fate of the magical world to take care of, too.

Magical beings living side by side with humans, dark secrets, and a coming of age story, all this plus a fabulous sense of plot flow, brilliant dialogue, characters that each have their own sense of charm and I was hooked! Bryar steals the show with her wit, penchant for trouble and her inner free spirit that is just dying to be set free!

WOLVES AND ROSES by Christina Bauer is fast, fun and magical reading! Settle in for a few chuckles, some adventure and pure entertainment as Ms. Bauer takes us into the world of the Magicorum and a whole different version of what happily ever after can be!

***4.5/5 Stars***

Wolves and Roses captivated my attention with unique ideas, characters that I quickly loved and a story-line that was tons of fun! I was hoping to pick up a book that was entertaining and enjoyable, and by that first page I knew I had found the exact book I was looking for. So if you adore paranormal romance that has a strong and snarky heroine, a fabulous best friend, a swoon worthy guy and a mystery that pulls you in, then definitely check out this book.
Now is not the time to worry about Knox. It’s the time to tell my best friend that I killed someone and burned her house down.
Yipes .
Straightening my shoulders, I knock on the door. - Bryar

I've never read a story where characters are supposed to live out their lives according to their fairy tale theme. What a fun idea! They're referred to as Magicorum and they belong to one of the three magical races: shifters, witches, or fairies. Bryar Rose is supposed to be following her Sleeping Beauty life template, but she's definitely failing at that. Yeah she has three fairies watching over her, a charming Prince who wants to marry her, and she has to use an inhaler to keep from falling asleep. But the girl could care less about following her path because she's obsessed with finding papyri from ancient Egypt. And she dreams about this hot guy, Knox, that is definitely not the Prince she is supposed to marry lol.
“Don’t order me around.”
Damn. I want to do more than order her around. I want to build my life around this girl . Know her thoughts. Touch her skin. Bring her into my world and never let go.
How can one woman upend your entire existence so quickly? - Knox

Ohhh I loved Bryar Rose! From her brutally honest thoughts to letting others know her opinion, she had me cracking up with her snarky ways! She definitely doesn't take anyone's garbage and I loved how she stood up for herself and those she loved. She's fiercely loyal, especially with her best friend Elle who is also failing at following her life template. Elle's is Cinderella btw. So between Bryar hunting for papyri and Elle being an expert jewel thief and con artist, they quickly find themselves in some situations that has them befriending two guys that I love, Knox and Alex. I loved how the four of them formed a friendship and worked together. The way they interacted made me into a smiling and laughing fool.
I gently stroke Wolf-Knox’s neck. “What can I do to help?”
“Run from here.” Wolf-Knox’s voice is so low I can hardly hear him. “Never come back.”
My blood turns cold. “But you’ll die.”

Oh my gosh, I heart Knox so hard. He's a powerful werewolf and I couldn't help but love his growly ways. We quickly learn that he is protective, fierce and oh so sexy. Thankfully some of the chapters are in Knox's voice, and I loved seeing the world through his eyes. I loved hearing what he thought of Elle, the extra clues we learned from him and the internal fights he had with his inner wolf had me cracking up. Knox is definitely book boyfriend material! So I desperately wanted Bryar to fall for him as fast and as hard as I did. But here's the thing, Bryar is stubborn and fights her attraction to Knox.
This isn’t the ending to any fairy tale template, but I’m not sure I want to follow someone else’s path anymore.
This time, the choice is mine. - Bryar

So I'm going to be purposely vague about how the plot unfolds, because it's more fun not knowing what's going to happen! Just know that the ending was perfect! It wrapped up some pressing issues, but there's still a lot that needs to be resolved or figured out. So yes, I can't wait to read the next book! I can't wait to be surrounded by these characters I loved again. Even if I did guess how a few things turned out, I didn't care at all. This book was too much fun and the writing was so easy to devour. So until that next book releases, I'm definitely looking forward to reading other books this author has written!

At first, I absolutely loved the premise of Wolves and Roses, as the world building seemed interesting, and I love a good fairy tale retelling, however, the further I got into it, the more I wished it were a fantasy, instead of a paranormal romance. The whole subgenera feels very 2012. Additionally, I found the author's writing style and a lot of the dialogue to be fairly dated and over the top angsty. Lastly, I'm not a fan of insta love. That being said, I enjoyed some of this story, such as all the scenes of Knox protecting Bryar Rose, and I think for the right person, this is the start of a really fun series.

This book is so amazing! I finished it in one day because I couldn't put it down! Now I am really excited for the next book in this series. Christina Bauer skillfully wrote this young adult fantasy with well rounded characters and settings adding intrigue and mystery. The premise for this book is fantastic and with the way it ends there is so much she can do with this story.

Magic is leaving the world. Humans live side by side with Magicoriums (shifters, witches, and fae). Magical or non magical humans are given fairy tale templates to live by if they fit a template at birth. Bryar Rose is a 17 year old who was adopted by three fairies when she was a baby. She is beautiful and has a sleeping condition which makes her freeze. It's actually a curse out on her by a powerful fairy. All of this means she should fit the Sleeping Beauty template.

She has to marry her prince by her 18th birthday which happens to be this week. The thing is she doesn't want to marry Philpot. He isn't her type. He has an ego for days and doesn't really care about anyone but himself. Not to mention she is a super fast hacker. So she is sent to a reform therapy type group for people who aren't fitting their template. It's there she meets her best friend Elle who is supposed to be fitting the Cinderella template but instead is an intelligent thief.

I don't want to ruin the book but let's just say the girls run into a little trouble and the guys that help them may not be what they seem...

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book.

So it happened, my first Netgalley book that I didn't actually like -wince- it was bound to happen eventually, but it was a shame it was this one. It sounds like something I would like, but I just didn't click with this book, and from the very beginning. I'll try and sort out the mess that is my feelings about this book.

Basically we get a complicated magic world where faeries, werewolves and wizards coexist with humans that don't really know the real truth about them- they're kind of groupies. The magical beings get their own set of rules, and live charmed lives. Bry is a fairy tale stereotype, another type of mystical being, and she likes reading hieroglyphics. Still with me? Then she meets a bloke and begins to question everything.

So my first problem was the romance, if you want to call it that. Two girls, two guys, match made in heaven. The guys are seasoned players, unable to marry or settle down because of the curse of being the leaders of their people. It means they have hooked up with girls over the years, because well, they can. Then the two leading ladies are pristine virgins who have never been kissed. I have no problem with either on their own, but putting that together as if the girls have to pure as snow pissed me off. Why? Why did it have to be this way?

In all honesty, the writing was just too simple in place for me. There isn't any tension, and it doesn't carry the complicated plot well. This extends to Knox's wolf as well; it mutters 'Mate! Mate!' constantly in his head, and sounds like a two year old. For me the idea of werewolves is that they are sexy predators, not two year olds having tantrums. It entirely killed Knox's vibe for me and well, there went the point of this book.

It's didn't really feel YA for me, maybe more Urban fantasy? I dunno. All I know is I struggled through. It seems like others have liked this though, so maybe you'd like it more than I did? Two stars.

Bryar-Rose just isn’t living up to her sleeping beauty magical template. She is even in a special support group for members of the magicorum who are struggling to live up to their fairytale templates.

1 – Taken in and raised by 3 fairies ✔
2 – Has no clue who her parents are ✔
3 – Falling in love with the handsome prince ✖ (seriously he is pretty but a tool no thank you)
4 – Falling into a coma – eh…not quite but does falling asleep when agitated count
5 – Ready to get hitched - ✖ hell no she’s about to turn 18 who wants to get married at 18

All Bryar Rose really cares about is being left alone to find and translate ancient papyri. It has consumed her life since she first started having dreams about it years ago. Those dream also include a boy she is very interested in, but that is probably just her teenage hormones talking. Well at least that is what she thought until she meets him in real life.

If Bryar didn’t have her bff Elle (Cinderella template), she’d probably go insane. Girls got to stick together, especially if they are some of the only Magicorum trying to go against their set stories.
All of Bryars goals revolve around turning 18, moving away from her three aunties (fairys) to be on her own and focus on gathering papyri and going to a normal high school, instead of a group for misfits. When she meets Knox, the boy she has seen in her dreams everything derails and she might lose something more important on her 18th birthday than she knows if she doesn’t figure out who she really is soon.

Knox is a warden of magic and a werewolf. He isn’t supposed to have a mate and even if he could werewolves do not mate human girls. So why does Bryar call to his wolf. What is he going to have to do to be able to open the door to the life he wants with a pack, a mate and kids eventually. He will do whatever he has to for that future. Now he just needs to convince himself and Bryar of things his wolf already knows if they are going to get the HEA and solve the puzzle trapped in the papyri Bryar is so obsessed with.

Really a fun YA book, I liked the set up and the characters. Interesting take on fairytale stories in a modern world.

Narration: I tell most authors this. There are only a special few who are great at actually narrating. Christina Bauer narrated her book and she did okay, it is a decent narration but is missing something that you get with seasoned narrators. There are pauses at the ends of sentences that are too long and inflections that seem off. I listened to this at 1.75x speed to compensate. I usually listen to books at 1.5x speed.

Wolves and Roses is a great beginning to a wonderful series! I had so much fun. Prepare for werewolves, fairies, and wizards.

Bryar Rose is a special girl. Her life follows a sleeping beauty template. To stay awake, she has to use a special inhaler provided by her fairy godmothers. She is also betrothed to marry an arrogant man on her 18th birthday.

Of course she wants to break her sleepy curse, but she doesn't want to marry Prince Philpot. As her birthday approaches, strange dreams and occurrences happen all around her.

Although there weren't many elements from classic fairy tales involved, I really enjoyed the action, romance, and fantasy. It has little bits of everything, and I can't wait for book 2. I highly recommend this for young adults that love crazy adventures!

First things first is that i really enjoyed this book, i liked the concept of every member of the magicorum follows a fairytale template. Our Main character bryar follows a sleeping beauty template. I like her as a character as she is very focused on what she wants and doesnt worry about what others want, she will fight them if she has too. I also liked the other characters in the book, Elle who is Bryar best friend who if you cant guess follows the cinderella template and Knox and Alec who are two wardens and our love interest. I liked how we got multiple points of views from the characters as we got to see different sides of the story and bothe relationships blossom. I listened to the audio of this which i really enjoyed i felt it really helped me to get into the story where i think if i were to read it physically it would have took me a while to get into.

I gave this book 4 stars.

Reviewed on Behalf of Book Addict live,
This is Book one in a wonderful new series by Christina Bauer, and as usual she has drawn me into another series that has kept me hooked.
This is set in a world where magic appears to dying, in this first trip into the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum.
Our kick ass heroine Bryer Rose who is living the Sleeping Beauty Template. Her best friend is Elle a failing Cinderella template. They both attend Magicorum teen Therapy Group for failing to live up to their templates.
Two great female characters who are tough and can take care of themselves. We always have such strong females in Christina’s books and this one is no different. The action really kicks in when they get caught breaking into LaCharmes office and they meet the arrival committee in the form of Knox and Alec, I have only one thing to say LET THE GAMES BEGIN.
The adventures certainly begin, and I was dragged me into the story that didn’t let me out until the end. When I finished I felt totally bereft. So I went back and read Thrax, and enjoyed so more girl power. We didn’t just have girl power, Knox was pretty spectacular and I could understand Bryar's attraction. I could go on about this book, but then there would be nothing for you to find out. If you enjoy Christina’s books you’ll love this. If you haven’t read any, this is book one in a new series. So it’s good place to start. I will say you are not left on a cliffhanger, as the story arc for couple finish on a positive not.

Book 1 in the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series - but lucky for me it doesn't end on a cliffhanger! That being said, the plot line of this book has been very interestingly set up. There are 3 kinds of species in Magicoroum (Fairies, Witches and Shapeshifters) who live in the human world with a fairytale life template. Which for a fairytale lover like me is a bonus. However, I find for someone not that well-versed in fairytales might find it a bit difficult to grasp the direct references.

Talking about the tropes, the book has an instant attraction, female hero protagonists and BFFs forever. An engaging one-time read with okayish characters but enchanting world buildup.

Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️

Very fun! Interesting world building, and great characters. I did see the big baddie from a mile away, and he was rather easily defeated. But, all in all one of the better YA/NA fairytale retellings I’ve read. Definitely plan to read on.

It’s always a risk when reading a book that made you curious even without taking into consideration those enough times when you didn’t enjoy an author highly praised by many others. The mix of shifters, fairies, witches (plus others) and the main character who wants to be just human… is all there is need it to walk the thin line that separates the good from the bad stories. But let’s be fair, “follow a fairy tale life template” (not a retelling, mind you) and one with a deadline! is a good start to intrigue you… me. And you know the saying: “No risk, no reward”, don’t you?

In the end, I took the risk and I won. Don’t be a fuddy-duddy because a reward is still a reward and it doesn’t matter if it’s a big a smaller one. I enjoyed the story. To me, as you know I’m not a YA for… ahem… a while, it seems that the story has what a YA reader would want.

The characters are appealing, with an agile mind and smart mouth (within sweet limits). I think the author capture well the insecurity and boldness characteristic to YA age.
False friends and foes will change sides and (part of the) secrets will be revealed. Each of the protagonists has a secret to hide or a challenge to solve and dendrites of their backgrounds influence Bryar’s story. These intercalations make the reader curious and for that, they offer good opportunities to continue the series.

There is a good steady rhythm, enough twists, heroic actions, and horrid conspiracies. At one moment we get also some gore… ish scenes, but only to make a point and to lay stress on the danger which our heroes have to eliminate. The writing is agreeable, the scenes flow easily from one to another accumulating information and enough tension for the most important ones. The Sleeping Beauty template is respected and the author succeeded to not iterate the classical tale.

And let’s not forget the romantic side of the story! It’s sweet, clean but hot and many girls will have material for their daydreams of fantastical (furry or not) knight that should woo them.

I had a good time reading Wolves and Roses and I’m curious to find out what comes next and, to be honest, to find more about this “fairy tale template”.

Read the story, you should enjoy it!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review.

Wolves and Roses is something else. The moment I found out that this book involves paranormal creatures living in a fairytale template I know that I'm definitely in. The whole concept was very intriguing, although I did have a little bit of hard time understanding the time when the story was set and how it fits with our real time (as in whether it's set in the past, present, future or entirely different universe). But all that initial confusion are kind of minor compared to how much I just love how Christina Bauer sets her pace and writing style. There are no moment throughout reading this book that I was bored. Major page turner let me tell you.

And not to mention the characters! It's hard not to love Bryar and Elle (nice names too by the way) they. Kick. Ass. I love how we get to see Bryar discover her self and adapt to her new identity. And of course I have to mention Knox, one word: SWOON. He is just so damn ADORABLE, Bry and Knox are perfect! And then there's Elle and Knox's best friend Alec which is also as perfect. I am so shipping these two couples. There's still so many things to uncover and I am legit so excited about the next instalment.

This book has an amazing plot, characters and writing style. The only conclusion we're getting out of this is that, Christina Bauer earns a place in my list of auto-read authors, and she should be in yours too.

I had high hopes for WOLVES AND ROSES, but it didn't live up to my expectations.

I actually really enjoyed the concept of WOLVES AND ROSES. For most of the book, things were great. The writing was smooth and the characters developed nicely. Unfortunately at some point things got a little ridiculous.

One of my biggest issues started when characters started going off on tirades or started going out of their way to make a snarky comment that really didn't fit the moment. During situations of conflict instead of doing the thing that would fix things right away—even as they mentioned they needed to do x or y—they just continued to talk about doing it instead of doing it. Very frustrating and definitely ruined the flow of the story. It made me want to put the book down and call it a day. Alas I forced myself to keep reading in hopes that it would only last a short time only to be disappointed that it persisted until the end.

I really really wanted to love WOLVES AND ROSES. Unfortunately I don't see myself continuing with this series.

Overall I really enjoyed this fun imaginative off the wall book.

Bryar for me took a bit to warm up to. Loved her sarcastic side. And her trying to go against the grain especially when it came to Philpot was great. Her aunties were very overprotective but also freaky and not what I expected. Their duplicitousness was not nice. Not nice at all. Her and Knox were wow...He really was what Bryar needed.

Elle was awesome. She was like a Robin hood of woman. She was sarcastic, loyal, funny and just all around great. Her and knox’s friend were so fun to see interact.

Knox was a great guy. He fought his inner wolf due to duty and really not trusting Bryar. Bryar is his mate but she could be killed if they got together and mated so he pushed her away. See he is a warden and until that whole fountain deal is taken care of he and his bestie are stuck being alone. They are in limbo. They have been collecting Pyri trying to decipher it and get their lives back but are not making to much headyway. Bryar is though and she joins in their deciphering. At the same time Knox opens her eyes to what the Danari are and about the head Danari who that was just a shocker right there. Not what I expected.

So as her aunts and Madame are pushing her to marry Philpot when she turns 18 like her fairy tale template says, Knox is trying to protect her and help her and she is trying to decipher the Pyri and become a normal girl. Only she never really will be.

There are fun adventures. Sarcastic and snarky banter that is really entertaining. Blooming love with guys that are great book boyfriends although Knox is a little growly at times and mystery and danger to boot. A great imaginative take and twist on fairy tales and magic that keeps you in the moment and entertained throughout. So many reveals and watching Knox battle himself was great. You have a great story, fun twisty and imaginative plot and bad guys to really root against with good guys you love.

The audiobook was narrated by the author and she did a good job. She knew the characters so she was able to add their attitudes into their talk. Her inflections were spot on and the extra energy and excitement she had helped make the audiobook more entertaining and fun.

I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. This review first appeared on my blog at https://alexcanread.wordpress.com/201...

I love fairy tales. I love fresh, fun retellings of fairy tales – especially when they’re all mashed together. Wolves and Roses is just that kind of story.

Bryar Rose is a Sleeping Beauty life template, her bestie Elle is a Cinderella life template, and wizards, witches, fairies, and shapeshifters are just part of her world.

Bryar wants nothing more than to turn 18 and not get married. If she can just manage that, she can live a normal life and not succumb to her Sleeping Beauty life template. But of course, the universe – and her aunties – have other plans for Bryar.

Wolves and Roses was a fun, quick read. Bryar and Elle have a great friendship, as do the guys that tag along with them on their adventures. Their friendship is the best part of the book.

The rest of the book is a little predictable and just a little convenient. It doesn’t take away from the fun of the story, but it does hold it back from being as strong a story as it could be.

If you’re looking for a fun, fluffy read that is a fun take on fairy tale mashups, Wolves and Roses is your book.

Wolves and Roses is the first in The Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series and will hit shelves on Halloween, 2017!

pooled ink Reviews:

This was definitely a different take on fairy tales than anything else I’ve ever read. The story takes classic well-known fairy tales and combines them with our modern world to create an interesting paranormal fusion.

I feel that there are aspects that could be improved and polished, but I do think that the author is onto a really cool idea and obviously it had me captivated enough to read the whole book. I think it was mostly something in the writing style that kept me at bay and that I believe will lend this book more towards teens.

If you’re looking for a quick and fun read that brings the fantasy of fairy tales colliding into our world then definitely give Wolves and Roses a look.

To see more reviews, considering taking a peek at my first in series YA book blog here

Wolves and Roses is the telling of a sleeping beauty who in, in fact, no sleep beauty. If you're looking for a twist on fairy tales with some dashing dudes and a romance-driven book yet has all the ferocity girl power has to offer, look no farther.

In the world of Magicorum, special individuals follow a fairytale template. For Briar Rose, she is a Sleeping Beauty Template. This means her life is settled. There should be thorns, and 3 fairies, a prince charming (named Philpot-why?) and happily ever afters galore. However, Briar Rose is anything but docile.

Okay, so Wolves and Roses is probably my least favorite series by Christina Bauer. BUT here's why. This tale is sold as a fairlytale driven book-and it is, but the reading level and story plot are definitely written for a younger audience- say late middle school early high school. We have insta-love and characters that turn immediately dopey in the face of their one true love. Also strong from a teenage boy who should not be in denial. You're going to get a lot of mixed feelings with age here. We've got these wily teens who definitely act like adults but have the maturity of...well, high schoolers.

The girl power aspect of the book was nice, albeit corny and a little over the top at times. The world building is too simple to be considered a book for those who are looking for a fantasy re-telling. The world isn't explained well and quite frankly surprised. Bauer is a master at complex characters and interesting worlds, this one was just so frustratingly lackluster. Will I read the second book? I mean, yea, probably. It wasn't a bad story just really not geared towards adults. Going on with the mind that this is written at the level of early high school, I think I'll go into the second book better prepared.

A young adult story that uses fairytales as life templates for the various characters and Bryar Rose, tha main heroine who does not fit into hers.

Bryar Rose, who is supposed to be a sleeping beauty template, refuses to agree to marry Philpot, her supposed prince, and envisions a different future for herself after her 18th birthday, when her curse will end and she'll finally get to be normal.

In the meantime, she spends her time trying to piece together the lost book of magic, by . In one of her late night adventures, she meets Alec and Knox, and her life takes an unexpected turn.

Knox, who is .

It turns out that she is anything but normal and she eventually finds out that .

A fun story, that mixes paranormal elements and fairytales in an engaging mix that kept me invested throughout the book. There are still questions unanswered by the end of the story, , but the series continues with a short story about Elle, Bryar Rose's best friend next in Moonlight And Midtown.

A young girl Bryar Rose is a Magicorum and all Magicorum have a life template they must follow and Bryar’s life template is sleeping beauty. But Bryar doesn’t live up to her life template so she must attend this special school for people who don’t live up to their life templates.

At this school Bryar meets her best friend Cinderella or Elle who like Bryar has secrets of her own. Elle is a very talented con artist who must hide out from her stepfamily. If Elle meets up with her stepfamily or they find her it could cause her a world of problems. Bryar and Elle become best friends who have each other’s backs always no questions asked.

Bryar has these episodes where she will fall asleep standing on her feet if it were not for her inhaler. Bryar was raised by her three aunties who make this special medicine for her to keep her from falling asleep.

Bryar’s three aunties want Bryar to marry prince Philpot but Bryar Rose wants no part of this prince but the thing is she has to fake it until her eighteenth birthday which is just right around the corner and then she will be home free. She won’t have to listen to her aunts anymore or anyone else for that matter. She will be free as a bird to live her life as she wants and that is a normal human with no magical powers.

Bryar meets the man of her dreams literally a man that she has been dreaming about her whole life. Knox is a werewolf who wants to protect Bryar from the moment he lays eyes on her. Whenever Bryar is around him her legs don’t seem to want to support her any longer. Knox is one hot dude that will make your tongue come out and slap your brains out.

Oh man I don’t know what to say about Wolves & Roses except that I fell hard and fast for the world the author created in Wolves & Roses and all the characters as well or most of them anyways there were a few that I didn’t care for much. From the very beginning I was drawn in and I couldn’t get enough of Wolves & Roses I fell asleep trying to devour this one, oh yeah. And that ending was awesome but it did leave me wanting more which is what a good story will do. Yes, I can’t wait to read the next book Shifters and Glyphs in the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series.

I would recommend Wolves & Roses to anyone who loves fairy tales.

I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Bryar Rose is supposed to live the life of Sleeping Beauty - you know? Cursed to sleep until Prince Charming shows up and saves the day? Instead, Bry is a failed fairy tale. She takes medicine to fight off the sleep curse that she has, and her three godmothers already have her prince lined up: Philpot.

Except Bryar doesn't want to be Sleeping Beauty. She definitely does not want to be with Philpot either. What Bryar really wants is to be a normal human. Not too much to ask for, right? And hopefully, when Bryar turns 18 in three days, she will get just that, because the sleeping curse should be lifted when she turns 18. And then she can ditch Philpot and go to a normal high school and have a normal job.

This is what Bryar looks forward to the most. Oh, and sneaking into a jewel shop with her best friend Elle - you know Elle? Cinderella? Yeah, Elle steals the jewels to return to the rightful owners, and Bryar takes photos of an ancient Egyptian scroll that the company upstairs gets shipped. Because Bryar has been dreaming about this scroll, and she is determined to crack it and find out what it says.

Then Bryar meets the man in her dreams - bad boy Knox - along with the owner of the company Alec. Well...she meets them when she got into the office with the papyri illegally...

Turns out that they want her help to figure out what it says. And Alec is even willing to pay her for it, being the big bad wizard that he is. Knox is a little harder to figure out, especially when he seems not to want Bryar's help. But the werewolf can't seem to stop following her around and bossing her around.

All Bryar had to do was keep on the lowdown until her 18th birthday, but Bryar's never been good at that. And when it seems that there are a lot of people going after her for numerous reasons, Bryar realizes that she hasn't been told just exactly who she is and how important she is for a lot of people.

But she's going to figure it out real soon, and she's going to have a lot of important decisions to make before it may be too late.

I have never read any of Christina Bauer's novels before, so I was very excited to start with a new series and get a feel for her work. And I loved it! I loved the original storyline with very familiar fairy tale stories and how these characters are definitely not like the original ones they are supposed to be living.

Plus, this takes place in today's time, so they are in a major city instead of a palace or tower in the middle of the woods. It definitely added flavor to the novel overall!

Bryar is awesome. She is super smart and pretty funny actually. She knows her "duty" but hates it and wants something better for herself rather than living the life her godmothers want her to live. Plus, who would want to be shacked up with a guy named Philpot for the rest of your life if you don't even like the guy? Definitely not me.

Also, Bryar is a computer geek and she loves finding the mystery of the Egyptian papyri message. What more could you ask for in a girl? Then to top it off, she knows self defense and how to fight her way out of a sticky situation. It's no wonder Knox is infatuated with her :)

There was so much mystery and secrets involved in this book that the reader definitely isn't bored at all. There's no time! Plus there is so much action and adventure crammed into this book that I felt like I was on the go all of the time.

There were a few moments when I got confused with this new world full of werewolves, wizards and fairy's, but for the most part I was definitely along for the ride and enjoying every minute.

And can I just say that the scenes with Knox were amazing?!? I am seriously hooked on this guy and will definitely be picking up the next book to see what happens! I just wish it wasn't so far away from now to get my hands on #2, because I really want to read it now! Always the curse to getting ARC's, I suppose haha.

I am so glad that I got this eARC and if this is anything like Bauer's other novels, I can tell that her fans will definitely enjoy this one as well, along with new readers like me! :)

Wolves and Roses (Book 1 – Fairy Tales of The Magicorum) - Christina Bauer

I was given a copy of this book by the publisher in order to provide an honest review.

Christina Bauer is an American author who writes many fantasy stories. Besides the “Angelbound Offspring” series she has also written the “Pixieland Diaries” and the “Beholder” series plus many more.

Byrar Rose is just your average normal seventeen-year-old girl. Well except for the part where she’s part of the Magicorum which pretty much means she is descended from one of three magical races, namely shifters, fairies or witches. And fulfilling the fairytale life template she's been told belongs to her destiny – the Sleeping Beauty template.

Which fits considering a powerful fairy cursed her when she was a baby, which now means she has episodes where the sleeping curse overtakes her. But luckily Bryar was adopted by 3 fairies who she calls her aunts. Luckily for Byrar they are the only ones to come up with a medicine to help her stay awake and fend off one of her episodes.

Yet unbeknownst to Bryar, everything she grew up believing, everything her aunties told her about herself was a lie – she is so much more than she was ever led to believe.

It all unraveled the day she met Knox, a bad boy who dresses in black and just exudes a sexy aura – and he’s a powerful werewolf to boot. With his interference or help, depending on how you look at it – he helps Byrar to unlock the power hidden inside her and discover who she truly is.

But uncovering a hidden power and unearthing secrets can be dangerous and deadly – attracting unwanted attention and enemies alike. Yet if Byrar can accept Knox’ helps and accept the part of her that has been hidden away all this time – then they might both come out of this in one piece.

“Wolves and Roses” is a YA fantasy story that is really tailored for a young adult audience. The author has made the teenage characters that talk and act like actual teenagers making them relatable and engaging to a YA audience. The world building was engrossing, the storyline was riveting, and all together made for a delightful and absorbing read. The story was left with so much more to tell, and I can't wait to get my hands on the second book in the series Moonlight and Midtown.

~I received an e-ARC from the author and willingly reviewed it~

Bryar Rose is one of the Magicorum, a shifter, fairy or witch who is supposed to follow the template of a fairy tale. In her case, that's Sleeping Beauty, however she doesn't sing or like birds. Wolves and Roses is the story of a failed fairy tale which teaches you that your life doesn't have to go how it's 'supposed' to go, and that you can set your own path. Follow Bryar as she goes on a magical journey, discovering thing about her world she's never even dreamed of...

I love the Beholder series, but Wolves and Roses? Absolutely brilliant, and way better (sorry Elea, but I prefer Bryar). It didn't take long for me to be hooked on the story; after all, I read a few pages less than the whole book today. I'm so glad Knox got a perspective, it certainly added to the story. The story is quite fast paced which I like, perhaps a little too sped up in some parts such as relationship development. The characters are amazing, even the horrid ones have a clear cut purpose in the book.

As for relationships, I didn't expect Bryar's meeting of the man of her dreams (in the literal sense) so early in the book! Not a negative thing, but the book had surprisingly little setup and I think a little more wouldn't have hurt as it's addicting enough to afford a slightly larger information dose at the start. I thought Elle and Alec's relationship seemed rather instant; maybe the reasoning behind this pairing will be revealed in a future book? Bryar and Knox are a beautiful couple, I adore it so much.

If you like fairytale retellings, read this book! It's topped by last favourite fairytale retelling (The Lunar Chronicles) by a mile, I can't wait for Shifters and Glyphs. Bryar's tale is different in that she runs away from her 'destiny' as Sleeping Beauty. There is a wonderful plot and perfectly flawed characters which give more reasons for you to read Wolves and Roses. The villains are super malicious, yet another character development tool. Christina Bauer has done a fantastic job with Wolves and Roses, I'm intrigued to see what she'll come up with next.

Review to come!

Update 10/12/17:

See more reviews on my blog Novels and Necklaces

Actual rating: 3.5 stars

I was excited to begin reading this story from Christina Bauer after reading the synopsis. I'm a big fan of paranormal romance, plus this seemed like it offered a unique twist on fairytales. While I did like it for the most part, there were a couple things that fell a little flat for me, which meant I couldn't give the book a higher rating. Regardless of these problems, I still greatly enjoyed the story and am looking forward to reading the next in the series!

Wolves and Roses is set in a world similar to our own where the Magicorum (aka magical beings) live alongside humans. We are quickly introduced to Bryar Rose who is not your average princess. She has no desire to fulfill her "template" of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale, including a marriage to Prince Philpot at the ripe old age of 18. I honestly loved Bryar Rose as the MC. She was independent, fierce, and fiery. She certainly could handle herself and wanted to be free to make her own decisions. Bryar Rose was definitely a standout amongst the other cast of characters (even for her wit alone!), but I enjoyed the other characters as well. They were all very likable and fun to read about.

The story itself is very fast-paced with a lot of twist and turns that I didn't fully see coming. Sure, I was able to figure some stuff out, but not everything. Everything is more or less wrapped up in the end, so there isn't a cliffhanger, but there are still plenty of questions for future books to explore. For the most part, the world-building was excellent...but this is also where my first problem arose. When we first start the story (and even in the synopsis), there is mention of how the Magicorum live their lives according to "templates" modeled on different fairytales. The problem is that it's never really explained why this is a thing or what happens if they don't actually fulfill there "template." This is something that was bothering me throughout the story and I wanted to know more about! The only other information we get about the "templates" is that in regards to shifters, if they do not let their inner animal transform before their 18th birthday, the animal will die. We don't however, learn about what happens to any other magical beings. For now, I'm just kind of assuming that nothing happens to other Magicorum, but maybe this idea will be explored and further explained in future books.

Another small problem I had was that there are certain things in the book that are told to the reader repeatedly (e.g. the inner animal of shifters dying). I know it's important to repeat certain things in a story, but it just became a little too much repetition after awhile. Finally, I did feel like the story slowed down in the end. This was only because the main battle took place over 50 pages before the actual end of the book. With everything being so fast-paced in the story prior to this, I felt like the pace lost its momentum a bit after that final battle. I don't have any problem with how the book ended though because Ms. Bauer did wrap things up very nicely. I just wish things didn't slow down as much as they did.

All in all, I really enjoyed Wolves and Roses and would recommend checking it out when you get the chance! It's a fun and unique story with a couple flaws that could be fixed in the next book. I am excited to see where this story goes and what is in store for these characters next!

Happy reading :)

So I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately. None of the books I’ve picked up have scratched my itch. I just wanted something well written with some humor, was that too much to ask???
Finally Wolves and Roses has done it!
description

Can we just talk about how cute this was. I’ve read Bauer’s Angelbound series and loved it. Great world and again awesome, funny writing.

Briar Rose was strong and witty, but she didn’t fall into the trap I feel a lot of authors make where her wittiness became bitchyness. She was a genuinely good person, which I think is rare to find. And of course I loved Knox. He wasn’t a complete tool and he let Bri know he cared about her *sigh* it was just lovely. I finished this book, middle of the afternoon, so ecstatic to continue with book two... only to realize book 2 hasn’t been released yet.

description

I don’t know why I convinced myself it was already published but now I’m completely heart broken and anxiously awaiting installment 2 next month!

I recently picked up Wolves and roses as I found it as an audiobook and thought to give it a go. The story was interesting and started really well (as well a tropey YA can be), but unfortunately, the narrator, the author herself, was too flippant in her rendition and it grated on me a lot. I have issues when characters are sassy all the time and nothing is really being taken seriously. I got really annoyed when one of the characters revealed something to the reader, but when he was supposed to say it to her, he kinds avoided it and left it for later which it will translate in "shit she doesn't know and I cannot tell her because I am not next to her and now something bad will happen which would've been totally unavoidable if I would've JUST told her" kinda trope. And that's a cardinal sin in my book. I already pretended that the main character didn't just have a major revelation that she didn't believe and not because it is such a different world, but because it suited the plot. So that's it for me, DNF at 50%. I am sure other people will see it differently, it is not a bad book, but it is definitely not for me!
