Incoming state senator to speak at 'Legislative Brew' Jan. 18

This month's "Legislative Brew" event features incoming 22nd District state Senator-elect Cristina Castro from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce office, 31 S. Grove Ave. in Elgin.

Sponsored by AT&T, you will have a chance to catch up over coffee with state Sen. Castro, ask your questions and mix and mingle with other chamber members all in an informal setting. Seating is limited so reservations are recommended. Visit elginchamber.com.

Castro will have just been sworn into her new position only one week before our Legislative Brew but is anxious to connect with the business community and learn from them what is important as she begins her service.

She is a second-generation Mexican-American and two-term Kane County Commissioner, representing the 20th District in Elgin. A marketing and communications professional, she is a lifelong district resident and active member of her community.

She was elected to the Kane County Board in 2008 and again in 2012, serving on the Judicial & Public Safety (chairwoman), County Executive, and Finance & Budget committees as well as the Kane County Forest Preserve District's Executive and Land Acquisition committees. As a member of the county board, she has worked in a bipartisan manner to bring forth change, solve problems, and balance budgets.

Active in her community, she is on the board of directors for the Illinois Housing Development Authority, Black History Family Festival, and Centro de Informacion, in addition to being involved with many other local organizations. She also was the first in her family to complete college and currently holds three college degrees: an associate in science from Elgin Community College as well as a bachelor of science and master of business administration from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

The Elgin Area Chamber connects members with the information, opportunities, and people from across the political spectrum that makes a difference to your business with "Legislative Brew." Sometimes they meet for coffee, other times they just might meet for a "brew." In any case, the chamber brings together a mix of individuals engaged in government and the policy discussions facing our community, region, and state in for "a cup and a conversation."
