Updated: sing along with ‘Rebel Rebel’ and other David Bowie tributes in Vancouver

The loss of David Bowie has left a void in the hearts of many. To commemorate both his death and birth – Bowie was born Jan 8 1947 and died on Jan 10 last year – Vancouver musicians and music fans are paying tribute to the late British rock star this month with events devoted to his music.

Update: we have added three more events, Impromptu Rock Choir’s three-night Bowie singalong.

Impromptu Rock Choir, an informal, drop-in choir, is inviting anyone with a song in their hearts – specifically, the Bowie songs “Modern Love” and “Rebel Rebel” – to join them for one, two or three nights this week. On Tuesday, Jan 10, the Choir comes to The Wise Hall (1882 Adanac St.) from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. (doors open at 7). On Tuesday, Jan 10, the Choir comes to The Wise Hall (1882 Adanac St.) from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. (doors open at 7). On Wednesday, Jan 11, the Choir moves to the Westside at St James Community Square (3214 W 10th Ave.), again from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. (doors open at 7). And again, the same hours, but this time in North Vancouver at Presentation House (333 Chesterfield Ave.) Jan 12. The drop-in fee is $10, and lyrics sheets are provided.

On Saturday, Jan 14, two more Bowie tributes come to the Rickshaw Theatre (254 E. Hastings St.) and the Rio Theatre. The Rickshaw returns with its second Bowie Ball, another action-packed night of live music with a plethora of local bands playing Bowie tunes. The lineup includes performers who played a similar tribute at the Rickshaw last year as well as some new blood. In all, more than a dozen acts will perform, including China Syndrome, The Judys, Space Junk (again), Cass King and the Next Right Thing and Left Spine Down. Tickets are available at local record stores Red Cat, Zulu, Highlife, Neptoon and at ticketfly.com.

That same night, some of the city’s burlesque performers join tassels at the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway) for A Live Band Burlesque Tribute to David Bowie. Performers include Burgundy Brixx, Shaboobie Boobarella, Sasja Smolders and more, with live music from Kitty Nights’ Hot & Heavy Band. Tickets are $15 in advance at kittnights.com and $20 at the door.
