Congratulations to all of this year's nominees. What an exciting year! As expected, La La Land (my #1 movie of 2016) and Moonlight are the biggest nominees and that's fine with me - they're two of the best movies of the year. I'm also very happy for Kubo and the Two Strings and Viggo Mortensen from Captain Fantastic, since I love both of these movies. I am very, very surprised that Amy Adams did not get a nomination for Arrival, she really deserved it. I'm also surprised to see Michael Shannon nominated, but all the better. I'm intrigued to see Lion and Hacksaw Ridge getting so many noms, but they are both great films so that does make sense in the end. And sadly, no Deadpool anywhere. I'm very happy with these picks this year, but I'm sure there will be plenty of discussion/complaints about them as always. What do you think of these noms?

Argh!!! Amy Adams getting snubbed is really awful, especially when Hollywood continues to recognize the talented, but over-praised Meryl Streep. This smacks of reputation over performance.

I finally saw Hacksaw Ridge and was surprised by how much of a great period film it was. Until the action started. For some one like Mel who slams Hollywood blockbusters he sure didn't hold back on the ultra stylized war scenes. Still a solid film but the action was distracting from the tone it started out with. Great performances though I would like to see Andrew win.

To me it seemed more like he was slaming Superhero movies for having action with no consequences. People get smashed in the face and no blood, people get riddled with bullets and no bullet holes etc Hacksaw Ridge to me had a more raw feeling than "ultra stylized", and when people get hit they get fucked up... War is hell and he shows it. Agree that Andrew did a good job, but have to give it to Casey. Not that I think the movie was as great as everybody is saying, but that scene at the police department and the scene with Michelle W. Damn that was hard to watch...

LA LA LAND will almost assuredly sweep this year's awards. I guess that is okay, but if the rest of 2016 was a complete S show, I think something less peppy would have nabbed the little gold statues.

Amy x Annette (thought she was locked for sure) snubbed! Biggest snub to me was Silence-only Cinematography. What happen!? I think La La Land will take at least half of its nominations home but what about the categories that count (Best Pic, Director, Actor, Actress...).

So sad Goodman did not get a nomination for 10 Cloverfield Lane, he really deserved it.

Damn, I forgot about him.

Have to say I am surprised Trolls was not nominated for best Animated film..

I'm surprised Silence didn't get more recognition... =0

If Kubo and Two Strings or My Life as a Zucchini doesn't win best animated picture, I'm gonna riot. Zootopia definitely doesn't deserve it and Moana, eh whatever. I'm tired of Disney taking academy awards for computer animated fare. The real artistry is stop-motion. That's a HELL of a time commitment and craft man!

Was a huge fan of Paranorman. Was bummed when that lost to Brave. I have mad love for Laika.... but Disney Pixar corners the market man...unless the Pixar release is Cars....

Sad but true. Here's hoping I guess...

Zootopia was amazing but Kubo might be the best animated film I've ever seen

Jon Odishaw on Jan 24, 2017

The soundtrack was phenomenal, the story was different and intriguing AND covered heavy topics of loss of a loved one. And visually...AMAZING. Zootopia was bubblegum and popcorn. Kubo was a elegant and RICH meal.

Probably went over most people's heads.

DAVIDPD on Jan 24, 2017

That's what Zootopia is supposed to be though. It's still a kids movie. Kubo is not. The attention to detail and animation was downright impressive in Zootopia.

Jon Odishaw on Jan 24, 2017

17

Honestly I didn't really notice that about Zootopia. Maybe I should give it another watch. I felt the same about Kubo though (regarding the attention to detail). And most of that stuff was handcrafted. The water....was ridiculous!

True this, Jon.

What you talking about? They explained everything.

I've only seen a few of these, but these 2016 titles look pretty weak as a group. Do better Hollywood!

bumboclot on Jan 24, 2017

I agree. I thought the film was wildly overrated.

Fingers crossed that Streep doesn't win and we won't have to endure another pretentious, hypocritical, political rant. After last year's ridiculous shenanigans, I find it hard to look at the Oscar nominee list and not thing that some kind of political officer has had to give it the one over.

I hope Suicide Squad gets an Oscar this year. A perfect cherry on this shit Sunday.
