This first installment in a four-part series is a celebratory tour of some of the most vibrant, impressive, contemporary mural art in the world. Fifty artists from six continents share nearly 400 examples of their best work and a little bit about their own lives and journeys as muralists. The criteria for inclusion in the book was simple: the artists had to be full-time muralists who push the boundaries of the art form and engage with the medium as a vital social concept. Many of these artists don't have homes; they travel the globe, entering foreign communities and cultures, and find shelter from hosts of festivals or art lovers. It's this dedication to their craft that sets this breed of artists apart from traditional artists, such as painters and sculptors, but their level of commitment is also what bridges the worlds of fine art and street art.
A collection of mural art designed for urban settings. I liked the work of ten or so of the fifty artists represented. Although I recognize the skill involved in creating large public murals, some of the artists apparently are stuck in a stage of arrested development and some of the content is generic rather than visionary, and shocking rather than aesthetic. Many of the bios are gibberish, but that's probably due to poor translation because many of these artists are from none-English-speaking countries.
The cover has got to be the most boring thing about the book, and nearly turned me off. I mean, with all the gorgeous street art in this book, why pick something that depicts none of that?
Just look at this.
So, if you want to see some really good street art, I would pick up this book.

I need to state from the start that the only thing I know about art is what I like to look at. But the one thing I can appreciate is the work involved. And there is a LOT of work involved in some of these murals...
From all corners of the globe, from bright colour to black and white, from small-scale to the sides of apartment blocks, the work contained in this book needs to be seen to be believed. There is a kind of magic with some of them - especially the extra-large ones. They kind of get your attention - not just for their size, but for the dedication and commitment by the artist to do it.
Aside from the photography, there are some mini-bio's of the artists involved as well as quotes from some of the artists.
It is a really well presented book with a lot of great photos of the artwork. Recommended!
'The Art of the Mural Volume 1: A Contemporary Global Movement' by Shane Pomajambo with a foreword by Carlo McCormick is a survey of building murals from all over the world. This book is the first part of a 4 part series.
The 50 artists in this volume come from all over. Each artist, in alphabetical order, has a brief bio and examples from their work. There are also some thoughts from some of the artists. Some started as graffiti artists and others came at the artform from more traditional avenues. In order to be included, these artists had to be working as full time muralists.
The building styles present challenging canvases, and I'd love to have seen some of these in progress. Perhaps future books will do that. The styles are everything from thought provoking to whimsical. Most have figures, but some are just geometrical designs. The artist, title and city are listed for each mural, and the book has 400 examples of this work. I had a great time looking at all the details and odd things included in these murals.

Such a gorgeous book, rich with color and imagination. This is a wonderful book with pics of murals all over the world and explanations of the artist and their works. I've lived in Philadelphia for a while and presently Los Angeles. These murals are all over the place in both cities. I think that it's great that artists can express themselves this way and it breathes new life into parts of towns that were at one time run down...not so lively. I think that there should be artists being able to paint murals all over. I love them! Great book. It'll be more than just a coffee table book. You'll want to go through the book and study each painting. I cannot wait until the other volumes come out!
Great pictures and optimal choice of artists. Some of them are very well known here in Berlin, others were perfect strangers to me, but not anymore.
Bellissime foto e grande scelta degli artisti. Alcuni di questi sono molto famosi, anche qui a Berlino, altri erano invece totalmente sconosciuti per me, ma non piú.

Street Art has evolved so much from it's early days as "grafitti" into a true art form perhaps the best example of modern 21C art. This is a beautiful collection of street art from across the globe
