IOS 10 on iPhone 6s - Battery drain issue

Hello Everyone!,

I have updated the Official IOS 10 OTA on my iPhone 6s, Here are the Initial impressions, I felt everything refreshing about IOS10, However one thing(The major) bit bothering me, Did anyone felt that Battery is draining Faster? In the morning Around 8:30 AM it was 89% after i did the update, Currently it's 56% (Straight 89% to 56%), I hardly used for mobile calls about 40mins, Whatsapp 20mins and other misc internet activites about 30mins or so, This was not the case with IOS9.3.5 and on screen time on an aggregate used to be 4hrs 30mins or slightly above, I seriously expected better battery life.

Thanks,

Sunil

I'm having the same issue as well, using the same phone. I now have to charge mid day. I have tried nearly every battery saving measure that I have heard in forums, etc. The frustrating thing is that I shouldn't have to disable functions to just be able to use the phone. Very sorry I have updated to IOS 10, really cannot find anything redeeming about it yet, and I'm a big Apple fan. It is freezing up several times a day, battery drain, apps are sluggish, Music is jacked up, Apple Watch had to be re-synced and lost data, all bluetooth stuff had to be re-synced, unintuitive stuff...really nothing that is positive that I can see (unless you are 16 and like to use emoji's). I have plenty of storage available but it's like this update was too much for the most recent phone aside from the 7. We had a couple employees with older phones that were basically bricked due to the update, and I have met no one who likes the update. Seems like this should have had a bit more testing before release. I'd like to revert back if possible.

Because I hate to be a naysayer or sound anti-Apple, ask me about my new Macbook. I love it!

Try exiting out of apps when not needed. Also put your phone on auto-brightness to save battery level

Overall exiting is a bad idea; it will actually increase battery drain. Apps that appear when you double-press the HOME button are not running. They are suspended. They are not using any energy.

I have the same problem. If I keep my iPhone 6 over the evening with Wi-Fi off but connected to the network ( data off) and looses about 20% of the battery over night. When I keep it only on wifi, and network turned off over night, I barely loose 1% of the battery, which is the normal case.

I think Apple really screwed up with iSO 10 and I can't wait to downgrade. It seems that no one at apple pays attention to these battery issues. Something is constantly draining the battery as loon as you are connected to the network.

If you turn off cellular data and and leave WiFi on, and don't plug in the phone, WiFi will turn off after 30 seconds specifically to preserve battery life. So essentially your experiment simply prevented all communications in and out of the phone. And the phone did what it was designed to do, preserve battery life from WiFi use when the phone is asleep and not connected to power, because WiFi uses power continuously when enabled, whether data are being transferred or not.

What your experiment actually demonstrated is that some app is using data overnight. And that is what is draining the battery. Find that app and the battery problem will be solved.

The simple solution is to leave the phone plugged in overnight. That way WiFi will stay on, and you won't use any cellular data. And you get added benefits:

  • You can enable automatic backups, and you will thus always have a backup less than 24 hour old.
  • The phone will be fully charged at the start of the day.

And there is no downside to it. The phone is smart enough to not overcharge its battery.

The problem is not the version. Take your post. Substitute ANY version number over the past 9 years, from 2.0 on up, and there will be posts saying exactly the same thing that your post says. Every one of those posters regrets updating, whether it was from 9 to 10 or 2.0 to 2.1, or 3.1.2 to 3.1.3. So either we should all be running iOS 1.0 today, or there is some other explanation.

That explanation is that sometimes the PROCESS of updating corrupts the data of some app, and the app starts misbehaving, usually trying to complete a data transfer that fails repeatedly. The condition is rare, and only happens to a few devices, but if yours is one of them the first reaction is that it must be a bug in the latest release. Logical, but wrong. It has actually been the specific version only twice; 2.1.1 and 3.1. And in each of those cases there were thousands of posts about it in days. I have an archive of one thread with 15,000 posts and 2.6 million views. At a time when there were only 1/10 as many iPhones in use as there are today. So unless you see something like that again it's best to assume that the problem is not the version that you updated to, but rather is some app that didn't "like" the update. Find that app and the problem will be fixed.
