Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 writer/director James Gunn is always happy to keep fans updated on his work through social media. He’s no stranger to holding impromptu Q&As on Facebook Live or peeling back layers of his work with a tweet or Instagram snapshot. Gunn has a hand in every aspect of his movies, even the music - and he hasn’t been shy about discussing the music of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, either.

Gunn has already talked about the soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which will continue the classic rock & pop tradition of the first installment. But the musical score by veteran composer Tyler Bates was impressive in its own right and Bates is set to return for Vol. 2. Thanks to Gunn’s generous propensity to pull back the curtain, fans will get a unique look at the making of the Vol. 2 musical score in a way rarely seen from movies before they are released: A live recording.

Gunn announced on his Twitter account on Tuesday that, “if all goes right,” he will “broadcast a cue” from Bates’ score for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in a Facebook Live video starting at “8ish” in the morning, pacific time. He later repeated the announcement on his Instagram page, saying the video will start “at around 8/8:30 am PST” and that fans will “hear a bit of the score and see it recorded live.”

Gunn’s Instagram post shows the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 orchestra at work at Abbey Road Studios in London, England, where he reminded fans “many of the Beatles’ greatest songs were recorded.” The iconic studio has also been the recording location for many famous film scores dating back to 1980, including Raiders of the Lost Ark, Return of the Jedi, the Star Wars prequels, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and yes, Guardians of the Galaxy.

The impending Facebook Live broadcast of part of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 score is only the latest example of many exciting details about the movie revealed through Gunn’s social media presence. The director has done a skillful job in revealing just enough to continue to build intrigue and anticipation for the sequel while spoiling little to no important details about the plot or characters.

Gunn sounded confident but not totally committed to the Facebook Live video. There are small indications that he’s not completely sure he can make it happen on time, if at all. He’s running the risk of dashing the hopes of his nearly 400,000 Facebook followers if he doesn’t follow through on his promise. But even without a Facebook Live broadcast, there’s plenty to be excited about regarding the music of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, whether it’s the score or Star-Lord’s second Awesome Mixtape.
