In Boston, event planners for a sister Women’s March were expecting around 25,000 participants. Come Saturday, more than 100,000 people filled the streets. At the main event in Washington, DC, crowds are estimated at half a million.

It’s a story being told around the world.

From small towns in Illinois and Idaho to city centers including Los Angeles and San Francisco to Paris, London, and the ancient city of Athens, Greece, thousands of demonstrators are rallying for women’s rights, prompted by Donald Trump’s newly officiated presidency and in response to events in their own countries.

After Trump’s victory in November, plans for a Women’s March on Washington caught international attention, prompting sister marches in 60 countries and all seven continents. Fourteen marches were planned in the United Kingdom, and organizers in India expressed solidarity with the hashtag #IWillGoOut, also in response to an alleged mass assault on women on New Year's Eve, as Vox’s Sarah Wildman reported. There was even a march in Antarctica.

According to event planners, the international protests aim to remind Trump that his rhetoric is not acceptable. Trump has bragged about groping women, made degrading comments about women’s bodies, and claimed (and then retracted) that women should be punished for having abortions. During the campaign, a dozen women accused him of sexual assault.

In response, demonstrators in cities around the world are armed with signs, both championing women’s rights and admonishing Trump, while donning pink hats with cat ears — a nod to Trump’s comment about grabbing women “by the pussy.”
