It’s official – the Obamas are no longer the first family.

Barack and Michelle have been succeeded by Donald and Melania. President Trump took the official oath of office at 12pm (5pm Greenwich Mean Time) before delivering his inaugural address.

He will continue to have an event-packed 24 hours as part of his first day as President.

Trump, along with new Vice President Mike Pence, will embark upon a 2.4km parade down Pennsylvania Avenue starting at 8pm GMT.

They will then attend a whopping three official inaugural balls along with their respective wives.

But what about the Obamas? What are their plans, now that Barack has officially passed the torch?

After eight years in office, Barack Obama and his family will be heading off on holiday to relax after what has been a busy and tense few months.

Their destination is Palm Springs in California.

"He and his family have enjoyed the time they spent there in the past, and they're looking forward to travelling there,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest.

Barack will fly to the Coachella Valley aboard the presidential aircraft (he hasn’t given up all the perks just yet) .

He has golfed there many times in the past while he was President.

Palm Springs is a desert resort that started life as a playground for Hollywood stars and starlets seeking to relax outside the glare of the cameras.

Liberace, Steve McQueen, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra were just a few stars who carved out their oasis out of sight on the Coachella Valley.

Set apart in the open desert ground of South California, these hidden homes built in the mid century are still heralded to this day as beacons of style.

With their flat roofs, angular symmetry and floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the homes are not only sleek, but practical – helping to keep homeowners cool in the desert heat.
