We are no longer accepting applications for these positions.

The Washington Post will be creating a rapid-response investigative team that will work closely with all parts of the newsroom, particularly the National staff over the next year or so. The team will be housed within The Post’s Investigative Unit and is aimed at strengthening our investigative mission by moving quickly, mining digital sources of information, and digging deeply as targets of opportunity arise.

An assignment editor—This individual should have experience managing people, editing copy, working in the digital space and guiding investigative work. The ideal candidate should have a high metabolism, a collaborative nature, an ability to shift gears, and investigative reporting DNA. The editor will also be responsible for setting and implementing a high-level digital strategy, shaping the direction of the team’s reporting so that it employs the most effective methods of telling our stories, from video to audio to graphics to text. This editor will work closely with Investigations Editor Jeff Leen,  Deputy Investigations Editor David Fallis, National Editor Scott Wilson, Senior Politics Editor Steven Ginsberg and Deputy National Politics Editor Peter Wallsten, along with video reporters assigned to Investigative and our embedded editor from the audience and engagement team.

Five investigative reporters—We are seeking individuals with a high metabolism and the ability to report and write at a high level, as well as a track record of producing revelatory work on tight deadlines. Candidates should be familiar with promising but often overlooked sources of information, particularly those that can be obtained quickly through digital means. In general, reporters will be expected to be able to report and write stories in a matter of days.

A database reporter –  The job will entail computer-assisted reporting for investigative stories for this team. The reporter will be expected to develop and report investigative stories, work with reporters to analyze data and contribute to information graphics. We are looking for people who can find data and help reporters turn around stories very, very quickly. Speed, agility and the ability to juggle multiple short-term investigative stories are required. Candidates should be able to analyze data in spreadsheets and relational databases. Knowledge in Python or an equivalent language is required. Ability to perform spatial analysis with GIS programs like QGIS or ArcMap is preferred. Knowledge of statistics and analysis is an advantage.

A graphics reporter—The person in this job will report to Graphics and be embedded full-time in the rapid- response investigative team. The graphics reporter will help communicate often-complicated stories with effective visual techniques. Candidates should be able to work quickly to create compelling digital graphics. Experience in graphic design and visual reporting is required, as is knowledge of Illustrator, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Familiarity with Python, GIS programs and statistical analysis a plus.
