Rebellions are built on hope. RogueNASA via Twitter

Science is under attack. The dark forces of anti-intellectualism have taken power, and one by one, various federal research agencies are being silenced, banned from discussing their research online in any capacity. Although their Twitter accounts are still active, references to climate change and environmentalism have been purged.

Fortunately, the resistance has clearly begun. Academics and researchers, both from government organizations and elsewhere, have taken to Twitter to set up unofficial accounts in support of the censored agencies. As they aren’t technically linked to the federal groups themselves, there’s nothing the Trump administration can do but to watch them grow in prominence.

The latest comes in the form of @RogueNASA, an offshoot of the original spacefaring organization. Describing itself as “The unofficial ‘Resistance’ team of NASA”, the account is a rallying cry for science and reason, particularly when it comes to both climate change mitigation and the environment.

-

“Science deniers are dangerous. The impact of climate change is real. There are consequences for infrastructure and human life. #resist” one Tweet reads.

“Rogue Twitter accounts are fun, but gov't employees and scientists are very afraid of being fired if they speak out & share facts. #resist” says another.

Another rebel has set up @altUSEPA in support of the beleaguered Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Lest we forget that in the last few weeks, the EPA has been threatened with censorship, defunding, and even dismantling.

Noting that “Environmental conditions may vary from alternative facts,” they point out that “the EPA collaborates with Mexico to maintain a healthy environment for 12 million people who live near the border.”

Someone has also set up @AltHHS, a parody account in support of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Likewise with @AlternativeNWS, set up to cheer on the National Weather Service (NWS).

This online movement first started with the National Park Service (NPS). Its South Dakota Badlands account began tweeting defiantly about climate change just as various scientific agencies were told to stop communicating with the public.

-

After they were reprimanded by the powers that be, rogue researchers set up a resistance page that delivered a huge serving of snark and risqué ridicule to the commander-in-chief. This appears to have inspired plenty of others to follow suit, and now there are a proverbial boatload of these unofficial accounts cropping up.

-

At the time of writing, it’s clear that the progenitors of the Twitter rebellion are still reveling in a bit of tongue-in-cheek proselytizing.

-

Far from remaining online, however, scientists are currently planning to march on Washington DC to protest this assault against academic freedom. If you’re interested in joining or want to help out, click here and join the Rebel Alliance today. (May the Force be with us.)
