I’m A Celebrity’s Stanley Johnson struggled with his very first Bushtucker Trial, Fear Factory, with Ant and Dec comparing his performance at throwing balls into a container to "watching England play penalties".

In scenes to be aired on Wednesday, Johnson, who was strapped to a revolving podium in the dark, was tasked with collecting balls passed to him by fellow campmate Kezia Dugdale, and then throwing them into a container as green ants crawled over him.

Rebekah Vardy, who was originally supposed to be taking part in the trial, pulled out on medical grounds which meant Dugdale, who came third in the public vote stepped in to replace her.

The former politician’s lacklustre efforts caused much hilarity among Ant and Dec, who tried to encourage him as he tried to locate the container.

“You missed it Stanley, come on keep going. There’s no urgency is there?” said Donnelly, while McPartlin added: “Come on, this is like a penalty at the world cup... He missed it.”

Johnson lamented his performance, telling the hosts: “This is going to be the world record number of misses. Missed again. Dear oh dear. It’s not as easy as you might think.”

To which McPartlin quipped: “It’s not as difficult as you’re making it look.”

As Johnson has been excused from several challenges due to medical reasons, viewers were looking forward to seeing him finally taking on one of the show’s notorious Bushtucker Trials.

One wrote: “So glad Stanley is finally doing a trial,” while another tweeted: “Wow Stanley is actually allowed to do trial on #imaceleb not ruled in medical grounds for a change.”

I’m A Celebrity continues Wednesday, November 29 at 9pm on ITV.
