Capcom: We are still committed to our promise that the initial release of Street Fighter 5 is the only version you’ll ever need to own

Capcom spoke in the past about their plan to make only a single version of Street Fighter 5, which would evolve over time but never require consumers to go out and buy a new copy of the game.

We've seen a lot out of SF5 in 2016, and when the community sensed the near coming of Season 2, talk of the game's future content made its way back to the forefront of the general conversation.

We asked Capcom's Matt Dahlgren if things have changed at all on this front, or if they're planning on going in any new directions with the future of SF5's development model.

"We’re always looking at how we can innovate on the series’ model, while keeping an eye on how receptive fans would be to a new type of offering for a Street Fighter game," said Dhalgren. "Street Fighter 5 innovated on the series’ model by being a service-based platform, with earnable post launch content.
It seems the idea of no "Super" version of Street Fighter 5 is still hard for some fans of the series to wrap their minds around. As you may have noticed in the banner, previous SF titles have had quite a few separate updates.

We're on the brink of 2017, and the general approach to games has very noticeable changed with downloadable extras, premium upgrades and the like.

The current model for SF5 makes enough sense within the parameters of today's gaming world, and while you could have spent $60 to purchase SF5 new and then an additional $30 on its two Season Passes at this point, all competitively relevant content is available through in-game currency.

If someone wanted to start playing SF5 right now, they wouldn't have to worry about the possibility of their purchase becoming obsolete in time though they would need to fork over a pretty sizeable chunk of change if they wanted all characters immediately instead of grinding for them.

"Even now, the price point of the main retail offering has dropped, which is essentially the starter version of the game. However, even if we come up with new models, we are still committed to our promise that the initial release is still the only version you’ll ever need to own with all game updates and balance adjustments available for free," he finished.

How do you feel about the model SF5 has followed thus far? Would you change anything? Let us know in the comments below.
