Earlier this year, Microsoft introduced power throttling which gives Windows users more control over how individual apps handle battery consumption while running in the background. If you want more control over how background apps are draining your battery, just follow these simple steps.

How to Save Battery Life With Power Throttling

To enable power throttling in Windows 10:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Battery > Battery Usage by App. Here you can see information on each app, showing how battery usage percentages for when the app is in use and when it's running in the background.
  2. Click on the app for which you want to enable power throttling.
  3. Uncheck Let Windows decide when this app can run in the background.

If you want to see if any apps are already have power throttling enabled, open up your Task Manager and do the following:

  1. If your Task Manager defaults to the simplified version, click More details.
  2. Go to the Details tab.
  3. Right click anywhere in the column headers and click Select columns.
  4. Scroll down to Power Throttling which you'll find near the end of the list and check the box to add it to your visible columns.

By default, Windows detects your important apps and prioritizes them when it comes to battery consumption. Rather than rely on Windows to make that decision for you, with Power Throttling, you can stop apps that are particularly egregious from using up your battery.
