Frankie doesn't doubt his attraction to other men, but his misunderstanding of how gay identities manifest causes a deeper confusion. He sees heterosexuality everywhere -- straight couples holding hands on the crowded train and his sister kissing a boy in the daylight of the park. The other guys use vulgar language in private, but their actual interactions with girls are presented as normal. The mere fact that homo/bi sexuals have to "come out" is stupid, i feel everyone should be respected for the people they are, people shouldn't have to announce it.

There are so many aspects of being closeted that are so rarely explored on screen. There's the pattern of reckless behavior we fall into, where everything said and done only leads to regret, and we surround ourselves with people who inflame the situation. There's the avoidance of the feminine touch, which only looks like misogyny from the outside. There's an undisclosed embrace of taboo desire, where the things we sexually distance ourselves from become the most appealing. There's the double lives we lead on, the desperation to keep them separated, and the devastation that follows when they inevitably collide. beach rats teaches you that hiding who you truly are deep down is never the answer. our protagonist frankie gets high with his boys on the beach during the day but who he is at night is a completely different story. frankie doesn't say much, but the editing, the camera work and the acting in this film makes sure that the viewer knows exactly how he is feeling and what's going through his mind.
