Back in February, we dispatched an editor to the frozen wastes of northern Sweden to drive a Euro-spec version of what you're looking at right now: the second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan. We got an early look at the CUV as a way of holding us over, since this second-generation Tiguan wouldn't hit our shores until the summer of 2017. Now that we're closer to the due date, Volkswagen's revealed the long-wheelbase 2018 Tiguan, also known as the Tiguan Allspace, just ahead of the Detroit Auto Show.
In some respects, the new Tiguan is already old. We first saw it at the Frankfurt Auto Show back in 2015. The reason for the delay is because our American version is stretched significantly compared to the Euro version. While both versions ride on the MQB platform (like its big brother, the Atlas), the long-wheelbase Tiguan and is 185.2 inches long in total, on a 109.9-inch wheelbase – that's 10.7 inches longer, riding on a 4.4-inch longer wheelbase when compared to the Euro version. The reason? An available third-row seat, the killer app for crossovers in America.
As for the mechanical bits, the Tiguan will come standard with front-wheel drive and the familiar 2.0-liter TSI gas engine making 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. 4Motion will be an option.
Inside, the new Tiguan will feature VW's new Digital Cockpit, and a bunch of optional active safety features. The sliding second row seats will split 40/20/40, and the third row will be standard on front-drive models (and optional on 4Motion models). In total, the Tiguan can have up to 57 percent more cargo capacity than its predecessor, but how much cargo room is left if you choose a third row is still to be determined.
Volkswagen hasn't noted any updated information about when to expect the new Tiguan, so we'll assume it's still on for this summer unless we hear otherwise. Likewise, Volkswagen isn't talking about pricing yet, although it's supposed to be competitive with similar CUVs.
