4 Michigan Macy’s Stores Among 68 to Close Nationwide

See the Michigan stores Macy's plans to close so it can invest in e-commerce and a better in-store experience.

Four Macy’s stores in Michigan are among 68 across the country the retailer announced Wednesday that it would close to save money, reinvest in e-commerce and give customers at a smaller number of stores a better experience. The Michigan stores are in Harper Woods, Westland, Lansing and Battle Creek.

The oldest of the stores, a 433,000 square foot store in the Eastland Center in Harper Woods, opened in 1957 and currently employs 121 people. The 334,000-square-foot Westland store opened in 1965 and employs 106 people. Two smaller stores — the 103,000-square foot store in Lansing, where 57 people are employed, and the 102,000-square-foot Battle Creek store, where 51 people are employed — opened in 1979 and 1983, respectively.

Three of the stores are already closed, final clearance sales will soon begin or have begun at six stores, and the rest will close by the end of the year, according to a company press release. These stores are part of the 100 closings it announced in August. When that announcement was made, the specific stores that were closing were not named.

Associates at shuttered stores may have the option to transfer to nearby locations that remain open, the release said, and some full- and part-time associates will be offered severance packages.
