Armament Systems and Procedures (ASP) announced a pair of new flashlights that are aimed at the law enforcement and personal protection niches. Called the Pro DF and Pro AA respectively, the new lights are programable by the user and tested to the FL1 standard.

Although ASP may be better known to many as an expandable baton maker, the company also makes other defensive tools such as flashlights. These two are the latest in its tactical lighting line.

Pro DF

The Pro DF is a “dual fuel” type flashlight meaning it can run on CR123A batteries or on a 18650 rechargeable battery. Due to battery chemistry, each “fuel” source provides different output characteristics. With the CR123A batteries, you get a brighter light with a shorter run time: 610 lumens and 1 hour 45 minutes. With the 18650, measured light output drops to 500 lumens and has a run time of 4 hours 30 minutes. There is a built in microUSB charging port which is convenient if you are using the 18650 batteries.

[A quick note about run time… As measured to the FL1 standard, run time is not a measurement of how long the flashlight puts out the rated lumen output, but rather how long it takes the flashlight to run down to 10% of its original output. So, the 18650 battery does not necessarily provide 500 lumens for 4.5 hours. It may, but we would need to see an graph to illustrate the light output over time. This does not mean ASP is engaging in any deceptive practice. This is simply the way the FL1 standard is written. Most major flashlight companies adhere to this voluntary standard.]

ASP calls this a transitional light – something small enough for everyday carry but powerful enough for law enforcement use. It is weather resistant and has a 2 meter drop rating.

The Pro DF has a tail switch that can be twisted to select a mode and then the button at the rear activates the light. There are a variety of light options including output levels down to 15 lumens and a strobe mode. The MSRP on this light is $140.

Pro AA

As you might surmise from the name, this light runs on a pair of AA batteries. It is similar in design and features to the Pro DF, but thinner and less expensive.

With a pair of lithium AA batteries, this light is rated for 305 lumens of output in the high output mode. It has a measured run time of 2 hours. Refer to the run time note above.

This light is only 5.5″ long and weighs only 5.4 ounces with the batteries. Getting 305 lumens out of something this size would have been the stuff of dreams just a couple of decades ago. For tactical flashlights we seem to be living in the golden era.

The Pro AA has a MSRP of $100.
