From the bestselling creator of Skippyjon Jones, a heartwarming story about the importance of imagination and creativity.

Sarabella is always thinking—conjuring, daydreaming, and creating new worlds from her imagination.  There is so much going on in her head that it can barely be contained. But there are times when daydreaming is decidedly not a good thing—like when you're supposed to be doing multiplication tables. Luckily, Sarabella has an understanding teacher and with his encouragement She comes up with her own idea to show everyone who she is.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Sarabella daydreams constantly but doesn't communicate her thoughts. Her parents, creative types themselves, don't share her teacher's concern that she needs to focus more in school. Her puppet-loving older sister suggests she "take deep breaths and squint" to facilitate concentration, but this just results in a dizzy spell and visit to the school nurse. Finally, a weekend assignment requiring students to draw their thoughts prompts the youngster to follow the advice of the beautiful whale living in her imagination: "To share it, you've/ just got to wear it." After much coloring, cutting, and pasting, she arrives at school wearing a hat containing "the most spectacular collection of doodles and daydreams." The lengthy text includes phrases like "Seeds of ideas" printed in grass and words such as "reason," "reflect," and "ponder" in a flower pot. The colorful illustrations, executed in acrylics, gouache, collage, and mixed media, depict Sarabella's daydreams in huge bubbles containing a cornucopia of objects. Her hat is so remarkable that it stretches across a spread. In humorous contrast, her cat appears repeatedly sporting the same thought: fish. This child has "a green thumb for thinking." Yet this is problematic in school where her teacher, though kind, repeatedly requests that she focus on her work instead of allowing her to learn in her own way. The scene in which she draws her thoughts reveals a distressed girl with "an upset tummy." VERDICT While Sarabella's ideas, seen through Schachner's dazzling illustrations, are presented as wonderfully imaginative, Peter Reynolds's Happy Dreamer offers a much more exuberant dreamer and encouragement for readers to follow his example.—Marianne Saccardi, Children's Literature Consultant, Cambridge, MA

Review

Praise for Sarabella's Thinking Cap

"This gentle book provides support for every child who daydreams in school and a wake-up call for her or his teachers. . . . A lovely celebration of creativity and a different learning style."
Booklist

“Readers, particularly introspective types, are sure to see the magic in Sarabella’s perspective.”
Publishers Weekly

“This is the sweetest read aloud for any child, but particularly for the little daydreamer in your life.”
—Geekdad

“Sarabella’s ideas, seen through Schachner’s dazzling illustrations, are presented as wonderfully imaginative.”
School Library Journal

"More than a tribute to a child’s imagination . . . A tender, sensitive tribute to those introspective students in a classroom, who don’t always quite fit the standard educational mold—a welcome thing, indeed."
—Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast

“This is a great example of the creativity in divergent brains.”
—Imagination Soup

“This is an exceptional book! It reveals the inner and outer world of a child with attention challenges, presenting this issue as a gift rather than a disability. The fanciful watercolor illustrations are charming and fun. This book is a valuable resource for any child who struggles in school. It could serve as a valuable tool to encourage understanding and respect of individual differences in the classroom as well.”
—Culture Honey

Judith Byron Schachner has been illustrating and writing children's books since 1992 and has given numerous presentations in schools and libraries. Her workshops are designed to be warm and personal with a special regard for the less than stellar student.

"Kids love to review my rotten report cards and laugh out loud at a slide show involving 4 cats and a funeral. Teachers love the 'Seed Box' filled to the brim with a magical collection of 'Junk' to inspire the writer in all of us. Everyone loves to watch 'Don Juan Skippito Bumblito the Great Sword Fighter' come to life with pencil and paper. By the end of the day we all believe that the stories in our own lives are worth writing about."

Judith Byron Schachner grew up outside of Boston in the 1950's. Her early years were not easy: "Growing up we didn't have much money. My mother was very ill, and to make matters worse, I was extremely shy. All my teachers complained that 'Judith needs to speak up in class, Judith needs to improve in arithmetic, and Judith needs to finish her work on time.' But no one complained about my artwork. On paper I drew myself a world where mothers were healthy and teachers were kind. My life was perfection in pencil."

Judith graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1973 with a BFA in illustration and went straight into the "greeting card factories, which included a stint at Hallmark. For five years I designed cute cards, sad cards, funny cards, and wedding cards. I was not having fun; in fact I never wanted to pick up a paintbrush again."

Married life changed many things for Judith. One clear advantage for her was that "for the first time in many years I could step off the 9 to 5 treadmill and devote all my energy to creating a portfolio of children's book art. That was until two little baby girls were born. Then motherhood became my favorite new job. Over the years I read hundreds of books to my daughters. Inspired by the art and words I was moved once again to finish my portfolio and take it on the road to New York. Around the same time I met Donna Jo Napoli who convinced Dutton Children's Books to let me illustrate her novel, The Prince of the Pond," published in 1992.

In 1995 Judith wrote and illustrated her first picture book, Willy and May, and has turned out a number of projects since then. "The wonderful thing about my job is that one day I can be writing about history, as I did in Mr. Emerson's Cook. The next day I'm drawing a wacky old woman for I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie. Or I can bring to life a beloved pet cat in my book The Grannyman. I live in a constant state of 3rd grade bliss - making up stories and drawing pictures. Isn't that what we all did as children?"

Several years ago the great author Lloyd Alexander stood in Judith's back yard admiring her daughters' Viking ship (as Judith puts it, that's another story). Working with Lloyd Alexander has been a dream come true for Judith: "Never in my wildest fantasies did I ever think that my art would inhabit his world of words."

My 5 year old (and his parents) are really charmed by this lovely book. Sarabella is a daydreamer. She is quiet and creative but often loses her focus at school, leading to some challenges there. She has a compassionate teacher and an understanding family of daydreamers but she struggles to get her school work done. One day her teacher gives the class an assignment, and Sarabella has her chance to shine. This is such a sweet read, and empathetically tells the story of a little girl with many ideas. I really like the compassion that Sarabella finds in her parents and teachers -- her struggle and frustrations are well-articulated but the adults in the story are trying to help her. The illustrations are just gorgeous and bring Sarabella's daydreams to life with a sense of magic that truly convey Sarabella's creativity. The language is lovely ("a bear of a thought"). I don't think quiet children who like to sit and think (but have a hard time because of it) find their way into many picture books and thus I was so glad to find this one. This is a charming read for anyone, and a must-have for children who get lost in their daydreams now and then. I would recommend this for ages 4 and up.

My son has grown up on Judy Schachner books and this did not disappoint. While it didn't have the Skippy Jon Jones humor, it was a beautiful and loving story. It makes me want to go get brown bags and let my kids make thinking caps - and they're now in middle school. The art is gorgeous and I have to say, I will be reading this for years, hopefully to my grandkids some day.

Sarabella is a thinker and a daydreamer. This is a sweet story that celebrates creativity and dreaming. I can see myself sharing with my teachers and students, especially those who might not fit the typical perfect learner mold. I think it would be cool to pair and share with Happy Dreamer by Peter Reynolds.
