Danish police have moved to arrest the daughter of Choi Soon-sil, the friend of the South Korean president at the centre of a political scandal rocking the government.

Chung Yoo-ra was visiting Denmark from her base in Germany. She won a team gold at the 2014 Asian games riding for her country, but she faces criminal charges for allegedly benefiting from her mother’s political influence.

“We are going through an urgent request for imprisonment and extradition of Chung
Yoo-ra through the Ministry of Justice. We are trying to contact her through the Ambassador to Denmark and Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” said a spokesman for South Korea’s Special prosecutor’s office.

Choi Soon-sil is accused of using her clout to help her daughter get into an exclusive school, and ace exams despite a mediocre work and attendance record, along with lavish spending of generous sponsorship money suspected to be a laundering operation, along with other examples of corrupt practice.

President Park Geun-hye has been impeached for her role in the influence-peddling scandal, and could be the first democratically-elected South Korean leader to be forced out of office in disgrace.
