Exit Interview 2017: Alberto Rosario

For the sixth straight year, we’re taking a look back at everyone that played for the St. Louis Cardinals this season.  Whether they were a major contributor or a bit player, here all year or for just a little while, we’ll look at their season and talk about what went right and what went wrong.  The stat line listed is just their time in St. Louis, though splits and other numbers in the discussion may be for the entire year.  Imagine this as them stopping by Mike Matheny‘s office for a little review on their way home for the winter.  As always when you see incredible artistry in the blogs, all credit for the header work goes to @cardinalsgifs.

Player: Alberto Rosario

Season stats: 3 G, 3 PA, 1 K, .000/.000/.000, -100 OPS+, -0.1 bWAR

Hero/Goat: None

Overall grade: C

Positives: Returned to the major leagues after having been outrighted off the 40-man roster last offseason….hit .247 with six doubles in 50 games at Memphis….had five errors in 445 innings at AAA….hit .377 away from AutoZone Park….hit .615 (8 for 13) in July….hit .359 when he batted ninth for Stubby Clapp.

Negatives: Proved that, really, there’s not much reason to add a third catcher in September….had five days between his closest MLB at bats….will be the guy (along with Chad Huffman) that nobody will ever remember was on this team if quizzed in about five years….hit .210 before the AAA All-Star Break.

Overview: I had nothing for Rosario here, really, so I turn it over to Twitter.

Outlook: Rosario was waived off the 40-man roster and is now a minor league free agent.  I wouldn’t be completely stunned to see him re-sign with the Cardinals but someone else might have a more pressing need for minor league catching depth.  Whatever the case, it appears pretty clear he’s never going to have extended major league time though perhaps he could wind up in the coaching ranks someday.
