On March 23, 2015, Turkish soldiers shot and killed eight mules at the Roboski border in southeast Turkey, near Kurdistan, Iraq. Tensions have been high between local villagers and military forces since the Roboski massacre of December 28, 2011, in which 34 innocent men and teenagers were killed by two Turkish F-16s.
This provocation to the on-going peace talks came only two days after Turkish Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and jailed Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan gave hopeful Newroz speeches urging brotherhood between Kurds and Turks. Mules are used in cross-border trade to support the livelihood of local villagers. They died with their eyes wide open, probably in shocked disbelief at man’s betrayal after working so faithfully all of their lives. For the full story read here.
