A “Netflix for software” model might sound a little weird on paper, but Setapp is a new service launching today in public beta that hopes to be just that.
Setapp was created by MacPaw, the developer behind utilities like CleanMyMac and Gemini. Once you download and install the Setapp software, you simply browse for apps you’re interested in and download them. As long as you have an open subscription, you’ll have access to every app included. Right now, the list includes a lot of apps we’ve liked over the years, including Alternote, Ulysses, Gemini, Screens, and HazeOver.
Setapp currently comes in at $9.99/month for access to 49 apps, though those numbers might change by the time Setapp launches in earnest early next year. Obviously the value proposition here is entirely dependent on how many apps you need and how often you need them, but if nothing else, everyone gets a free month to try it out. You can sign up for the beta program right now on the Setapp site, with invites rolling out over the next few weeks.
