This 1980s-Style Thor: Ragnarok Trailer Is an Absolute Delight

Hey, remember the 1980s?

It was a time when you had to go to a store to rent a movie—and that movie was on video tape with terrible sound and picture quality. But back then, we didn’t know that. We just knew we loved movies. On occasion, those VHS movies would have incredibly cheesy, dramatic trailers before the feature.

It’s an era that holds a special place in the hearts of many people. Among them is almost certainly the team at Nerdist. They put together an inspired trailer for the already hyper-stylized Thor: Ragnarok preview that pretends it was released in 1987. Its lovingly crappy quality is spot-on, complete with an overblown voice over, and they even make the excellent 2017 visual effects look bad, if you can believe it. Plus, there are a few other surprises. It’s pretty great.

Like I said, delightful. Especially the Ferrigno and Goldblum stuff.

Now, if you want to feel really old, think about this. This trailer is supposed to be from 1987. In 1987, Chris Hemsworth was four year old, as was Tessa Thompson. Mark Ruffalo could almost drink (he was 20), Cate Blanchett was 18, and Tom Hiddleston would have been just six. It’s been a long time.
