5 Mistakes Beginner Landscape Photographers Make
As with all creative crafts, there are many common pitfalls that photographers fall into when they’re just starting out. Landscape photographer Toma Bonciu runs through 5 of them in this inspiring 5-minute video.
Mistake 1: Shooting JPG vs Shooting RAWBonciu begins by recalling his own experience when he first switching from shooting JPG to shooting RAW. “By shooting JPG you’re really missing something big,” Bonciu argues.
Mistake 2: Thinking That More Expensive Gear Will Result in Better Photos
Most of what makes a good photograph is in how you capture a scene, and Bonciu quotes Ansel Adams to drive this home: “There’s nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.”
Mistake 3: Not Paying Attention to Light
“Learn to recognize great natural light, or learn to create great artificial light,” Bonciu suggests.
Mistake 4: Photographing Anything That Moves
Bonciu again quotes Ansel Adams: “Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer – and often the supreme disappointment.”
Mistake 5: Not Knowing What Quality Is
“Follow those who talk about the soul of photography,” Bonciu says. “Don’t follow just anyone who knows about the buttons on a camera or the photographer on Facebook whose photographs get 100 likes.”
