The causes and outcome of patients following esophagectomy returned to ICU

Abstract: Objective:To investigate the causes and results for patients following esophagectomy return to ICU.Methods:The clinical findings of totally 65 patients following esophagectomy out off and returned to ICU again were retrospectively analyzed.Results:The causes to return to ICU (65 cases)were attributed to pulmonary infections leading to respiratory insufficiency,anastomotic leakage,pleural cavity infection,pulmonary embolism,cerebral infarction which finally resulted in 13 patients died.8 died from respiratory dysfunction,3 from anastomotic leakage,1 from cerebral infarction and pulmonary embolism respectively.Conclusion:Postoperative pulmonary infection,anastomotic fistula,pulmonary embolism,cerebral infarction are the common causes to return to ICU for patients folowing esophageal cancer resection.Postoperative respiratory tract management is emphasized due to the highest incidence of pulmonary infection and fatality rate.
