However, recent footage shows the 'Old Faithful' turned into the ultimate snow machine thanks to unusually cool temperatures.

The famous geyser coined its nickname from its constant eruptions, averaging every 44 to 125 minutes all year round.

The water ejected from Old Faithful is usually a scorching 118C – with the steam reaching an eye-watering 177C.

As temperatures plummeted below freezing at the site in Wyoming, it provided enough of a difference to turn the hot water and steam into snow.

The video shows what appears to be thousands of gallons of snow spewing from the spring and being thrown high into the sky.

The rare event occurs as the hot water instantly forms a cloud as it hits the outside area, and that cloud then begins to snow, according to website Science Alert.

Old Faithful is one of about 1,000 geysers on the planet, with a majority of those found in Yellowstone – one of the US' most popular tourist attractions.

The famous vent often produces spectacular eruptions, spewing up to 32,000l of boiling water at a time, with more than one million eruptions recorded since its discovery in 1870.
