The value of MRI for differential diagnosis of different pathological types of breast mucinous carcinoma

Abstract: Objective:To assess the value of pre-enhancement T1 WI,T2 WI,dynamic contrast-enhancement,DWI and ADC value for differential diagnosis of pure mucinous carcinoma and mixed mucinous carcinoma of breast.Methods:MRI features of 38 pure mucinous carcinoma and 16 mixed mucinous carcinoma confirmed by surgical pathology were retrospectively analysed and compared.Results:①Margins:29 of the pure mucinous carcinoma had well defined margins(29/40),11 of the mixed mucinous carcinoma had ill defined margins (11/16).②The signal intensity time curve patterns:In 24 of the pure mucinous carcinoma they appeared as type Ⅰ (24/40),and in 11 of the mixed mucinous carcinoma they appeared as type Ⅱ (11/16).③ADC value:The mean ADC value of pure mucinous carcinoma (1.62±0.47) × 10-3mm2/s was higher than that of mixed mucinous carcinoma (1.23±0.32) × 10 3mm2/s.ROC curve was drawn,AUC,the optimal cut-off val ue,sensitivity and specificity were 0.733,1.615 × 10-3 mm2/s,57.7 ％ and 88.9 ％.There was statistical significant difference in all above results (P＜0.05) between pure mucinous carcinoma and mixd mucinous carcinoma.Conclusion:Different type of breast mucinous carcinoma has its own characteristics.The combination of multiple MRI imaging sequences has im portant value in preoperative differential diagnosis of pure mucinous carcinoma and mixed mucinous carcinoma.
