Joon Kim, the acting United States Attorney for the Southern District announced this week that 32-year-old Diabel Samb and 24-year-old Mamadou Ndao have been charged with conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, Hobbs Act robbery and one count of using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

The conspiracy charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in state prison. The firearms offense comes with a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Police said that at approximately 11 a.m. on Oct. 24, Ndao and Samb entered a Verizon store brandishing a firearm. Samb displayed the gun to two store employees and directed them to open a safe in the back room of the location. Ndao then proceeded to fill a suitcase with cellphones and other electronic devices.

The suspects traveled through Yonkers, on several Westchester parkways, and into the Bronx before coming to a stop in Mount Vernon after striking a Westchester County Police vehicle. The Jeep suffered extensive front-end damage, while a county police vehicle sustained minor damage. The two fled on foot and one was apprehended by county police and the other by officers from the Pelham Police Department. The suspects were then turned over to the Greenburgh Police Department.

Kim said that investigators recovered clothing worn by Samb and Ndao during the robbery that they lost fleeing the scene. Numerous electronic devices were also recovered from the suitcase.

“Hard-working people go to work every day to earn a living, and abide by the laws of our country,” FBI Assistant Director William Sweeney Jr. said.  The subjects in this case allegedly chose to skip being hard-working and law-abiding, and demanded money from stores at gunpoint, putting both customers and employees in harm’s way.

“Due to the efforts of our dedicated partners in law enforcement, these perpetrators have been delivered into the Criminal Justice System where they belong,” Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. added. “We remain committed to reducing all types of crime, particularly those involving criminals who would resort to terrorizing retail store employees by robbing them at gunpoint.”
