3 Insights from This Episode

1. Unarticulated expectations lead to expectation hangovers. Why are our expectations so high? It’s because we expect people to read our minds, instead of articulating our expectation to people. We project the way that we would deal with something on someone else… and then get angry when they don’t act that way. It’s important to remember, especially as leaders, that not everyone views the world through your lense. Instead of getting angry at the person who didn’t respond to a situation the way that you would have, ask them: Could you explain your thought process here? I’d love to better understand your communication style.

2. We need to be with our suffering, not just bypass it.  As leaders, we all have moments of disappointment. Maybe your church numbers are declining or you received negative feedback on a sermon. Instead of telling yourself to “toughen up” say: “This hurts, I’m disappointed, and I’m going to make a date to process these emotions later.” One powerful method Christine gives for processing emotions is something she calls release writing. Listen to the full episode to hear how to do this.

3. Forgiveness is about freedom. Sometimes, we get trapped into thinking that forgiving is condemning what happened. That couldn’t be more wrong. Forgiving is about letting go of the judgement and anger that we’re holding. When we don’t forgive, we’re keeping those harmful emotions in our hearts. Let yourself be with your suffering, go through the emotions and then release those feelings.
